As the Fairlight Secan is not available until June '22, post your photos here to convince me to buy a Shand instead

Some of the paint jobs are amazing.

Nearly bought a Stoater a few years back, spoke to Mr Shand at a bike show, lovely guy. Was a bit more gravel thatn I really wanted at the time, but with hindsight.....

I ordered my Stooshie in summer 2o17 and it arrived just before Christmas that year. I went with an understated colour for longevity's sake, with a couple of personal touches including a favourite Welsh childhood song verse on the inner stay.

I really took my time to build the bike up over the course of a few weeks and that attention to detail has paid off handsomely over the 10,000km that I've ridden it so far. I started out with 28c tyres but have since switched to 35s and I think I've swapped the chain... but otherwise it's the same as the day I built it. The paint is wearing very well, helped hugely by the PDW mudguards.

I guess that I'd have had the same experiences whatever bike I'd had in the last few years, but there is something that has hugely gotten under my skin with this one and it's stopped my serial bike-swapping in its tracks. It suits me perfectly as an all-round commuter, tourer and explorer and I will likely never sell it.

Sorry, no pics but my Mrs absolutely loves her Stoater. At 4 years old, the paint job remains (almost) immaculate, despite going out in all sorts of weathers and some pretty respectable tours, including a tarmac Tour du Mont Blanc. Currently on 32mm tyres but has been up to 1.9" for light off road duties. Flat bar, unfashionable 3x10 & Hope X2 brakes; weighs about the same as one tyre off my fatty.

That's lovely

I have a strange desire to get a hot pink Stoater with 650b tan walls like the recent Instagram post

Ah, I think I've had mine 9 years now so it's not quite so photogenic any more as it gets used all the time for everything.  This is what it was like when new though

Still love it to bits and it gives me real pleasure to get on it every morning (well that or the Bahookie SS).  35 is a great size of tyre for it as then it gets used for pretty much everything I would use a mountainbike for in the local woods as well as scooting around town.  I love the level of skill to build these beautiful, beautiful bikes in the UK and as others and you have mentioned the instagram feed is not a good thing to look at 🙂

Can't imagine ever selling it and just about to order one for my daughter

The hot pink is stunning. A couple of weeks ago they put up pics of one done in their standard yellow but with matt lacquer on it, which I thought was a clever way to produce a really unique looking colour.

It's the 'lichen green' colour with a regular gloss finish.  You can see from the photos above that sometimes it looks green and sometimes it looks a bit yellow.  I'm really happy with it.

I can ride with my eyes closed!

I was promised some new decals in October after a respray in 2009. Still waiting! 😀 TBF they stencil and paint them now so don't have any.

I do have an original one as above which I am loathe to use, prefer to donate it to the museum one day...

Need a satellite to take a picture of my bahookie according to my wife. (After explaining to her what it means as she's English 😁)

Here's my Stoater in the Yarra Ranges, Australia:

Why I went for white bar tape on a gravel bike I don't know. This was from 2015 so apologies if the spec has changed. Mine had QR wheels in a steel fork which I didn't get on with, largely because you could see it twisting when braking from 45mph on an Alp.

Also, riding Paris-Roubaix on it:

The guy loading the coach at the start actually grimaced when he picked it up but to be fair it acquitted itself well.

Invisible as I can't seem to find a way of sharing the image which doesn't give access to my whole Google photos account

Nice!

A lot of their bikes are Rohloff hubs. Apart from low maintenance, what are the advantages and disadvantages of them?

I've never seen one nevermind ridden one

I’ve never seen one nevermind ridden one

Disadvantages - heavy, expensive, some folk find them draggy gear change is poor

Advantages - long term cost saving, consistent ( but poor) gearchange, longevity, crash resistant, drive chain lasts forever, multiple shifts easily, shifts while stationary

I rode a mate's Alfine/Nexus thing once, it did feel like the back wheel was made from lead - is that the draggy you're describing?

i have no photos or even a shand, but why are you dithering? if it’s financially based dithering, that’s perfectly understandable. otherwise you are wasting your life away! the bike you want makes life better. this is possibly an indisputable fact.

6 years old now, been through 3 groupsets and 3 different builds. From 40c Nanos for dirty reiver etc, to full Sram Red 22 and light wheels. To now having full mudguards, racks and child seat. A truly versatile and tough steed! Fillet brazed 853 goodness 🙂

I dithered for a while, and then Shand dithered for a while along with a broken web enquiry form until I rang them.

On the upside (for me) this showed up on eBay and I bought it 3 months before lockdown (good timing!) although it took another month being screwed around by lying bike shop before I could complete the conversion from a geared gravel abomination to a mountain bike singlespeed.

I was going to order a matt one but glad this is gloss now, the only thing is I'd have chosen the other colour option (gold?) for the Logo as I think it would have contrasted nicer with the green 🙂

(It's a Bahookie)

Has anyone got a Stoater with a carbon fork? The fork on the Stoater is the only thing that puts me off it.
