I've just got a nice new Kona Dr Dew (rhyming not intentional) and it feels wrong putting my kryptonite lock mount on it, it's just so ungainly especially with a big lock like a New York. I've got a pannier rack on so was thinking about strapping it to that some how. Any bright ideas out there?

I used to keep a D lock on my bike and then thought about it some.

Personally the only time I leave a bike for any length of time is at work, so I store my New Yorker at work in the bike shed and carry a lighter lock (10mm cable) for quick shop dashes when I'll only be gone for a few minutes etc... Obviously if doing this you need to realise how vulnerable a cable lock is!

Yeah I've debated that - I'm trying to use the bike more in place of the car though and I know no solution is 100% thief proof but I'm slightly less worried with a big D-lock, leaving it outside the shops or whatever

My u lock sits happily stop the rack, bungied down.

Rattles like *""" on cobbles, as it did using their fancy frame-bracket, which also wore the paint.

Bike messengers carry their D-lock on their bags or in their belt.

the frame-bracket let the lock rattle A LOT, but extra o-rings between the lock and the U might do the trick ?

I use the kryptonite d-lock mount on my top tube with the curve of the d towards the front wheel. Horrendous on its own but solid and rattle free when you secure the loose (curved) end to the top tube with a reusable cable tie. Daily usage for over a year and still on the original cable tie with no issues. Tried it on a pannier rack but it made SO MUCH NOISE. My mount is bodged with old inner tube (as is most of the bike to dull various cable rattles), so no paint issues - you might want to use a velcro strip in place of a reusable cable tie if you're bothered about your paintwork though.

Back when I did carry it, I found a position that effectively had it over the upper portion of the rear triangle, forget exactly how I'd mounted the bracket but it worked well. Bigger feet or smaller frame would have led to heel fouling.

I see the car replacement argument, when I was living in the city centre I used to plan my week such that the car might well not be started all week if I didn't need to actually leave the city for any reason. Now I live further out on the Pennines and I'm using it a bit more but still under a tank a month.

D-locks are bulky things. I'd not want a decent one in a bag partly for weighting but also potential for injury in case of accident - likewise stuffing it in your belt - asking for trouble. If I was looking again, I'd be looking at chain locks and considering wearing the chain around my waist. Very much like a Hiplock ๐Ÿ˜‰ Based on available chains, if you're much larger than 32" waist you can probably forget about a readymade chain though no reason you couldn't get one cut to appropriate length and get your own lock. Racks are a good shout too if you have rack and pannier I guess.

Little velcro loop things

The ones with a loop on the end

These things http://www.bka.co.uk/Accessories-Tools/Product-2383.aspx?gclid=CjwKEAjwrMzHBRDW3saA88aT80MSJACbvo1TZ4rA_5wb9WhnPpuXXIOgjiPNcjs6shM_3W0GNbaioxoCq8Tw_wcB

Leave the permanently attached to the lock velcor lock to rack.

Provides a wee bit of antirattle cushioning too.
