[#4835419]

Not had this thread for a while, no haters please just after pics of folks' Jones. Especially if anyone has a steel diamond frame with ti truss forks...
Dirty and in use is better, single speed is better still 😉
(If anyone fancies getting rid of their jones let me know)

Can't say I know a huge amount about them, and that truss certainly looks like a handful. But the design of the frames seems to me to be both elegant and functional and by all accounts is a superb piece of both design and engineering. I'd love to get a closer look and have a go on one, just to see if it really all stacks up. If anyone in the NW has one and fancies enlightening me, let me know 😀

Fontmoss, I was contemplating pulling my Jones's apart for a ride this summer, to use a steel diamond and a ti truss combo.. but thought about it more and simply CBA ) As in, the weight difference is 350g or so, worth it, but riding a Jones makes me understand (as I suspected but..) that weight really means so close to sod all in that bike's ride experience that I'd have to be racing at a really high level to care. And if I was, I'd use the Ti SF. I can't tell any difference in comfort between the forks once I have the tyre at 20psi anyway, they're built for huge stiffness without jarring rigidity, not comfort 'give' as such, a common misconception.
If you're really keen, I'm a big enough fan of Jeff's bikes (ie promoting what he does) to offer you a back-to-backride on the steel with either forks fitted if you wanted to try them on my local trails. You can bring the beer.. Chilterns area.
A chap on MTBR (wishiwereriding?) has that combo, looks good.

Oh yeah, pics. Bit of a pic thread failure so far so here's 2 : )

Cheers Jameso, very kind offer and I may well take you up on that! Yeah I've been in touch with wish i were riding. I wish steel diamond came in polished or similar - black frame with ti truss looks weird and not entirely convinced by the blue or green frames.

Interesting you don't feel weight is an issue given there's prob a kilo between the frame set ups you have before even take into account running the steel geared.

EDIT: From wish i was riding on mtbr

I like those steel / ti combos, but I just see function and choice in set up, not a 'pretty bike' ) It's never going to be pretty like a Master X-light is it..

I do feel the weight, but it doesn't really affect the ride - based on using both F+F set up SS with same wheels and kit. Just a bit different, stiffer and more BMX like. I have the heaviest wheelset I've owned so far on them as well and it just doesn't bother me, there's advantages that outweight the weight itself. Talk to Jeff about your thoughts and trust him if he advises something a bit different. He's a very down-to-earth guy and imo he understands how bikes work like no-one else.

Not been used much in the last 18 months due to my fatbike kind of taking over all my rides.
So could be with a new owner soon.

Does anyone have a dropper post on their Jones? Wondering how much a singlespeed one would be like a big BMX but the seat has to get out of the way for that vibe (but I can't stand up all the time...)

What's the rough weight of a singlespeed non fat steel truss framed bike? Anyone raced one, and if so how did they find it?

Thinking of one in a few months time as a replacement for my Unit 29er, that, if memory serves, came in at under 26lbs withe the nice SAT steel frame (as opposed to the generic Kona steel). Is this a reasonable target weight for a Jones. The titanium one would be lovely but out of my price range, and out of production, i believe (Merlin RIP)

My fat fronted steel space frame is 26lb 8. My diamond and unicrown was 25lb 9, without a super pimp build and a normal front. Steel diamond with truss with some pimpy light stuff ....23lb would be easy .

Last batch of ti SFs were Taiwan made; there is another lot on the way.

I'd like to, makes sense on a bike that's so much fun, but the point of the bike to me is keeping it simple. The short ride position makes getting off the back really easy, I use a slim saddle and don't ride with it that high anyway. Plus CBA with the faff / expense ) Dropper+flats on my steel Jones would be a riot tho.

Tazzy, are your scales accurate? Seems really light from other Jones weights posted.
Dunno what mine weighs, just 'feels ok' when I pick it up.. Steel diamond + truss is about the same as a light steel 26" HT and a Reba. So you can estimate build-ups based on that, plus the fact that light rims and tyres are a wasted opportunity, H bars and the front hub aren't that light either. Steel, 28lb or a bit over geared is my guess. Ti SF SS, 24-24.5lb? Both with P35 rims and 800-850g tyres.

Light weight isn't the point of a Jones, it's all about strength and rigidity in the right places and some compliance where it's needed. There's a video on the Jones website that shows the rear end vertical flex, it's much more than I thought it would be. So stiff 35 or 50mm rims are where it's at, not weight weeny rims + high volume tyres up tp 2.5". I put a weight weeny stem on mine, against Jeffs advice - it felt terrible, so flexy that I could feel the handlebars twist before the wheel turned - totally ruined the ride, not so strangely, I put the stem on my full susser and it felt OK - I listen to Jeff a bit more closely now! 🙂

Jameso yep fully calibrated scales from work. I'm a weight obsessed little freak and will hunt high and low to get the weights down. Front fatty is the 1320g superlight folding nate tubeless with closed cell foam and a stans valve. Rear is a stans ztr on goldtec pro comp ss with ceramic bearings and superlight carrier with a racing ralph. Brakes are modified xtr to slim them down and with series r rotors. Pedals are look quartz carbons current saddle n post combo is sdg carbon and I fly...middleburns cranks not that light but on a ti bb and the jones bars are heavy as is the frame....lighter frame next.....ti methinks.....will get pics of space frame fat front on scales for you. Xx

Thanks Tazzy. I'm off to the US later this month and steel frames are £600 cheaper over there and in stock. Titanium are out of stock and price at the moment (replacing a road bike instead). A light build, down to my previous Unit would be great, as the components on that weren't particular;y special.

Of course the alternative is either a carbon or scandium niner, but I just fancy something a little different. And I'm not that fast when racing XC 😉

Are all the new truss forks set up for 135 hubs now? With the Rabbit hole I'd be happy with the older 100 version esp if I could fit a knard at the back too.

All 135mm fronts. It's worth it with the truss fork - it's a brilliantly solid front end, a big part of what makes the bike work. Apparently Knards don't fit at the rear.

A 100mm truss on a diamond ti would make a la-z-boy road tourer tho, that would tempt me )

if you look on the jones website Jeff lists all the headsets that play nicely with a truss setup and what bits/parts you need. Had a king on the diamond and used a hope on the ti truss set up with 2 upper cups.
