Some nice bikes on here. Anyone running one as a singlespeed? What is the gear ratio?

Can I run on with an "half" drop bar (like a horn bar)...? Do they have a real advantage over MTB?

Another Jake the Snake here:

[IMG] [/IMG]

105 groupo & Aksium wheels.
Changes I've made from stock:

Pedals - changed to Crank Bros for mud shedding.
Stem - shorter (100mm) for nipping through switchbacks a bit easier.
Bars - Shape and drop preference.
Post - wanted a layback. Also matches stem & I'm a ponce.
Brakes - Kore cantis were seriously awful. Swapped for Avids
Saddle - one that doesn't feel like a sofa.
Tyres - I'm something of a tyre swapper. My shed bulges with rubber.
Tape - double-wrapped 'cos my hands are massive.
Carbon spacers added - see 'ponce' remark.

Recently built Kinesis Crosslight Pro6. It's been tweaked a bit since building, so I should really take some new photo soon. It's now got a 41t chainring instead of the 44t shown (11-32 at the back gives a good range), and I've just replaced the rear mech hanger and rear mech too (disastrous end to the first race). Hoping for more success at another muddy race this weekend. I'm enjoying it round town.

38x18

i managed to get 2 winters out of the Open Pros
[img] [/img]

used for the odd "race"
[img] [/img]

now used mainly for commuting with 10 speed (34/46 & 12/27) and trailside pootles around Stroud
[img] [/img]
(and I need that 34/27 to winch myself out of Stroud!)

Though how does it compares to a HT 26er...?

POSTED 11 HOURS AGO #

Seeing as no one is answering this I will have a go! I will assume that when you say a HT 26er you mean a xc race style bike not a long travel HT. Personally speaking, cross bikes are great for mixing road and light off road and are a lot of fun when ridden like this, they are also a lot of fun on single track and certainly make old routes feel different. But they are a compromise, I found mine a lot harder to descend at speed on than an xc race bike and not quite as nice to ride on the road as a road bike.

I actually did a test route on both xc race bike and the old cross bike, mix of farm tracks, single track (nothing too technical) and road (route about 8 miles long), I was quicker on my xc race bike. Although I would add that I am very at home on the MTB and less so on the cross bike and was done on different days (at the same heart rate range but hardly scientific).

For me if I was going to race cross regularly I would get another cross bike, or if I had the money to have another bike but if it's just to mix road and off road as a recreational thing I would just go with an xc race bike with semi slicks.

I'll give it a go too.

Basically a CX bike is nothing like a 26er hardtail. CX bikes aren't mtbs with smaller tyres. CX bikes are a classic jack of all trades and they're suprisingly capable of most riding be it on or offroad but riding a mtb after a CX bike feels like an armchair ride in comparison.

I swapped a 100mm hardtail for a CX bike at uni as I didn't have space for 2 bikes. You CAN ride (with some running) everything that you would normally on a mtb, just differently fast - uphills and smooth bits are speedier whilst technical stuff gets harder. However, in general you will bail out before the bike breaks!

Lots of pictures of cyclocross bikes of all varieties (none of them mine) on here.

That isn't my frame as such, just a pic to show what mine looks like (until I found my camera and took a pic), pics of my frame are now on Classifieds.

Divorced? I will be if I don't get rid.............. 😯

CX vs MTB??

Feels a lot different. I've been running the Onion as a bit of a hack/commuter with rigid forks, flat bars & bar ends and skinny hybrid tyres. It works fine in that mode.

I converted my Amazon tourer to a bit of a CX-alike and it jsut feels a lot faster. On road you have the aerodynamic advantage. off-road the 700c wheels roll over stuff better, so much so, I can absolutely "get" the advantage of a 20er now. The Amazon is the only bike I've been riding recently and I'm absolutely loving it!

Bars are a bit higher now and I've swapped out the saddle for something easier to manoeuvre about on.

As much a 29er as a cross bike, but way more versatile than the latter. Currently shod with 35-47mm tyres for mixed riding duties.

Yup, Deda Newton shallows on the Yeti - need rotating slightly, but are a good fit. Deda Presa on the SV which are fantastic.

The SV looks amazing - have you got the custom sprayed dt hubs? Would it be cheeky to ask how much a frame and forks like that cost? I know they dont make many a year.
