Yes I know I nearly hate myself.
Inherited a bit of money and wanted this bike to be a memorial to them.
That meant a long term keeper bike which really means an Orange.
Even a cheap Orange comes with rubbish bits and no bottle mount.
Would have got a Segment but my nice wheels won't fit.
Would have got a Whyte but a £2500 bike will be going for £1500 next year plus it's heavy and won't take my wheels.
Which leaves the Anthem. Light , takes a bottle is already discounted and cheap enough meaning it doesn't have to be a keeper.
The remaining inheritance will be used on a family holiday.
I get a bike and a holiday. 😀

I loved my 29er Anthem until I killed the frame riding it on terrain that was a probably outside the 'design envelope'. I nearly killed my face at the same time, but the only reason I was riding there at all was because it's such a capable bike, especially with a 1.5 degree angleset and 120mm forks... Was having too much fun and didn't give a drop enough respect.

I replaced it with a Tallboy C, so no pics, but happy memories and a thumbs up...

My Anthem 29er with 120mm forks is the reason I can't justify a new bike. Its a fantastic bike and the pedalling platform suits me. A 120mm Reba made it even better. It just works, well.

I'm sure you've going to be pleased OP

2017 Anthem 1. Absolutely love it, have had a variety of FS bikes over the past 20 yrs and this one is my favourite so far. Swopped out saddle to an ISM (medical history), dropper to a Fox Transfer with Wolftooth, grips, rear tyre. Came with tubeless valves and tape so went tubeless after first ride

I had a 26er..it was awesome, genuinely best bike I ever owned. Sold it foolishly to fund a super light weight hard tail and after one ride regretted it.

Considered buying a 29er version last year but could not find the carbon version cheap enough and got offered a great deal on a asrc instead.

Go for it.. Not flash and common as muck, but they are common for a reason.. They are ace. Only draw back is they aren't the lightest if thats a priority.

I bought one as a frameset in 2007, built up pretty lightweight, rode it for years.

Superb bike, just wants to be flat out.

I still have it - though rarely ride it now as at 47 I prefer something a little less 'energetic' and, truth be told, the 2007 version is a bit steep at the front. It's still great for bombing up and down the Ridgeway though

I'll not get rid of it

I love my Anthem 2 also , it's a 2015 & I bought it last year for £1174 , upped the forks to 120mm , fitted a dropper & 180 front disc (now warped). I like the light weight & the super quick steering but the front does get quite tucky on the loose stuff. Gonna try a shorter stem next, but now my Cove is up & running it will get a break from the tougher stuff.

The current one is a quite different ride, proper long, slow, slack, but still light and fast. I am biased, but I do think it's a grand bike 😀

Giant really should have a Anthem carbon 29er in the UK. I'm sure it would sell well if the price mirrored the rest of the range. In fact, Giant must be under increasing pressure to do a u-turn on there half arsed approach to 29ers.

Got a frame replacement last year after cracking my nearly 5yr old well used & abused Anthem(Big up to Giant, replaced within a week just off a picture of the crack).Built it up, rode it once, put all the bits on a h/tail & haven't looked at it since. Might put it back together again soon.......
Trouble is, this darn fat bike is just toooo much fun to ride & is stopping me riding any other bike I own 😀

I recently bought the Anthem Advance 1 and OMG it is the BOMB!!! Too stupid to add pictures to this thread I'm afraid .. or they aren't in photo bucket so not sure how else you can add them.

It is insanely light, handles so nicely and just looks awesome!

Ive got a 2012 26' Anthem and its a brilliant bike. I've test rode some new bikes recently, Trek, Bird etc, nice bikes but cant think they offered much more than the trusty Anthem. I'd really like to give one of the 29ers a go. I think Anthems suit my riding and might stick with them.

Had an 26er X1 orange and White, 2015 I think? Great bike, really liked it sold it to fund a carbon 29er hard tail for racing, a scale which is also awesome. Hopefully next year I will be in a position to have a full subs again, and it will either be an anthem 29er or a spark. Great bikes. Can't see why you need more travel tbh unless you are a regular at bpw and the like

I built this Anthem X up in February and finally took it out on its maiden voyage this week. 26" wheels, 27 speed, still doing the job nicely. Sub 25lbs too.

I think 120 is optimum personally

I put a 120mm on my 29er. The slightly increased HA improves confidence downhill and turn in, and doesn't seem to affect climbing - the bike doesn't feel taller. It makes the bike feel like you can push it into rough stuff harder yet the back end never gets phased. A worthwhile improvement IMO.

The 2017 one is 120 front and 110 rear, a bit longer and lower than the previous incarnation (I had a 2015 SX). It's an extremely able bike and I reach my limits before it does 🙂

Going to 100 could be why I get more pedal strikes. I know they have low bb height, so setting the new forks to 120 will be great.
Ps
Sorry for the bell in the picture, some of my riding routes were where tourists walked so it was a nessary extra.

Yes I do, it's a Rock Shox monarch XX and it's a bonus not having to reach down for the lock out lever on the shock. I have a dropper on mine too as I ride more trail than xc. I would recommend giving the dropper a try before selling as these bikes are a very capable trail bike, especially with wide rims and big tyres.

The 2017 one is 120 front and 110 rear, a bit longer and lower than the previous incarnation

Would you be able to expand on that? I've dismissed the current longer legged model for racing (Marathon, backup XC) as I saw it as more "trail" geo than "race" hoping for a 100mm forked model.

Otherwise, I know of an offer Advanced that could conceivabley replace my 29er for a more modern geo although I kind of feel its not much of a change vs the money differential between sale & purchase.

^^^^ The new one is quiet different to the 2015/2016. As I said, I had a 2015 Sx, so 120 front and 100 rear. The new one is still 120 front, and rear now 110, however it has 34m stanchions, a much stiffer back end, and longer and lower without losing any of it's xc and uphill pace :

Just ran a straight Geo comparison with a Scott 920. Very similar Geo. I'd favour a 100mm fork, but even the Spark with that fork is only 0.5 degrees difference in the HA.

The big difference is in the remote lockouts, although running my Anthem 29er in Trail mode seems to not demand that.

So I'm merely musing, but how much does a 650b Anthem Advanced weigh? 😀

Just put together to see if it fits. It does!
13.5 kg with pedals on. Will lose the tubes and the dropper (that cable !!!!) to drop the weight a bit.
The front wheel with axle is a few grams heavier than my 29 Hope Arch wheel tubeless. So they are not too shabby for OE.
No nice pictures of it on a sun baked trail as it's pissing down and dinner time.

Hi
I had a 26 wheel advanced 2013 (I think) which I built for under £1K from a second hand frame. Loved it but sold it to a mate when I moved to 29ers. He still has it and uses it fairly regularly on xc rides.
100mm front and 80mm rear but felt like more when you needed it. Compared it to riding a Star Wars speeder bike on Singletrack- just so fast
Possibly in the market for a large 29er version if anyone is getting rid.

Cheers
Steve

You won't need to, those Anthems already come with a Carbon wheel set.

An old duffers connection with modern bikes.
Rode to work so that I can get to the bank later.
First impressions it's very quick. The rear suspension needs a lot of air in it. 230psi is a lot more pumping than 150. Anyway it works in a way that you don't notice. Which is a good thing.
The lock out works , praise the Lord. After a decade of being told we don't need it and I very glad for its return.
The lever is a long way away though.Might make the lever a bit longer then I could turn it off with my foot. Or I could try and use the dropper switch the make a remote.
The dropper didn't even make it out of the shed. There's nothing that I ride regularly to make lugging it around worthwhile.
The gear shifters are push for up and down. Very odd after shimano.
Glad I've got the 10 tooth cassette as I think an 11 would spin out in no time.
There's a little lock sign on the rear mech which I thought I should read up on. My Google search reveals that it costs £129! It shifts alright but not that it deserves that price tag.
The bars are massive and will disappear before the weekend and might reappear once the bushes die back.
I had to read the instructions to work out how to tighten up maxles.
Then the back one works different to the front.
The rear hub makes a noise which is essential in alerting walkers. So the wheels might be staying. Shall see if the cassette gets stuck to the hub as per the other thread before buying better wheels.
Not sure on the front nobby nick. Might just need getting used to and I'm not tubeless yet so running higher pressures.
Down sides? I think it looks a bit dull where as mrs zip thinks I should peel the red stickers off.

Went for a minimalist build on my wife's Anthem:

It's a good build. She's had absolutely no problems with gears skipping or punctures. I can highly recommend it and it ticks all of the Weight Weenies tick boxes.
