Hello guys, i do FR/DH and an X9 mech has popped up for sale.

It is a long cage, should i wait for a medium or short cage to come up or should i just get it?

What is the difference between the three? Short, medium and longg?

Thanks. Danny.

Shorter would be better for DH I think as you can run a shorter chain which means it's less likely to fall off? I could be wrong on that though.

The bigger the difference in chain ring sizes and cassette cog sizes you use, the longer the rear mech needs to be.

Thus a triple chainset with an 11/34 rear cassette will not run on anything but a long cage mech if used on the extremes.....

...........and who here can ever guarantee that they won't change into that extreme differential that will lock the whole system rigid if you have the wrong mech.

If you have a short cage mech I think theyre less likeely to hit rocks and that than a medium or long cage.

I use a long cage on my 1x10, running 32 x 11-36. Chain device keeps the chain on. Wasnt sure if I could use a med/short cage with 36t cassette so played it safe. I'm about as far from a DH'er as is possible to get though.
