I am sure i read recently about how to shorten hoses without bleeding the system if you were intalling from new. Anybody tell me how to do it or point me in the direction of the article?

Use a sharp stanley knife.
Cut it straight.
Then clamp the yellow shimano things around the hose using a vice or mole grip.
Chuck on new olive and gently tap the gold insert into it till it's flush with hose.
Attach and bleed.

Don't forget to put nut on before olive and gently grease olive with light grease-white stuff does the trick.
