Sorting out my dh bike and trying to figure out what size mech I need. I'll be running 1x9 with an 11-34t cassette on a Bullit which I don't think is too bad for chain stretch when fully bottomed out. I prefer the clean looks of short cage and would be nice to get it out of the way, but will it work ok with the big range cassette? Been offered a Shimano 105 (guess that's a road one) for £15 posted, would that work ok or would I run into problems with shifter or cassette compatibility? I'll be using an old shimano deore shifter, it may be deore xt.

A short cage will work, but a road mech has a max capacity of 27/28 teeth.

If you got a new smaller upper jockey wheel it may work. Or it may work anyway, just not very nicely.

9 speed road mechs work with 9 speed mtb shifters aswell. Dunno about 10 speed stuff though.

Ok so I'd need a short cage mtb specific mech for it to work then.. can't find many of them about for cheap so might just go with a medium SLX or something..

I don't know if short cage MTB ones exist do they?

I'd just go with an SG cage SLX or XT shadow. Should be able to pick one up cheap.

PS technically I think shimano refer to SG as long and SGS as super long but I think most people refer to them as medium and long.

Stuff like the Saint looks to be short cage but it's also very expensive.

yeah saint do an SS which is short or a GS which is long.

In which case do shimano refer to any as medium? 😆
