So, if I want to run 1 x 9, what would be the pros and cons of the rear mech being S,M or L?
Asking question just before I buy a PG-970 DH with X0 or X9 Twister.

Short will run fine on a 1x9 with a 11-32 cassette and up to about 40t on the front.

On a hardtail or a full sus? Some full sus designs change the effective chainstay length, causing issues.

Nice one. Thanks.
So is there an optimum on the front? ie. the smaller, the better for running smoother?
Or is that just a personal thing?
What's gets your vote for the front, size, make. Going on a set of XT's.
Are the hollowpin chains up to it also?

Short cage, main benfit is not hitting the mech, and it will fit, so may as well go short, id go between 32-36t up front
