considering changing my old type short cage xtr for the new saint one but don't know which is best to go for? ss or gs. Currently running a double ring up front 22 & 34 up front with bash and 11-28t (I think) xt cassette.
any advise? - if yr running a saint what gearing u running? - cheers.
I would go for the medium cage.
not sure which is gs or ss
Yeah second that; although the short cage can handle a wide ratio cassette (it has a natty little widget that you can remove if not using one, which makes this possible), I doubt that it could handle the extra chain associated with the difference between the 34t and the 22t rings up front. The longe cage is designed like that to wrap the additional chain links up, but then I suspect you already knew that.
small ones look cooler though..
the tech blurb keeps going on about max difference in range max 177!?!?! - between what? don't get it or am I being thick?
oops - I mean max 17t not 177.
I've just fitted an SS to my DH bike (single ring with an 11-32 cassette) and I would have thought the cage a bit short for a twin-ring set up, You could probably get away with it if you were careful with your gear selections, but it would be a bit slack/tight in the wrong gear combinations.
Brilliant piece of kit though, much more suited to a DH/Freeride bike than say an XT. Super strong springs, seems quite robust too, and looks great. The widget for running small blocks is a great trick too.
38T x 3T rear runinng long cage, looks mint, runs smooth
Rancho - yes this is what I was referring to. The maximum difference refers to the front chainrings, so in your case its between 34t and 22t, which is 12t (der!) and therefore not a problem.
If you were running a triple ring set up, say 42,32,22 then the max difference would be 20t.
I'm running a 24/36 up front and an 11/32 at the back with a medium, think thats the gs, and it works a treat
I was running 24/36 up front with a 11-32 at the back with a Saint short cage, no problem. Works very well 🙂
cheers for all yr advice! - got me head round it now! It seams I could choose either a ss (short) or sg (medium) then! If I went for ss perhaps have to remember not to cross my chain line (smallfront-small rear?)tho'
Fuzzhead - thats great, because I may want to run a 36t front at a later date - is that on a VPP bike by any chance?
should a VPP frame have any effect on chain growth and therfore effect which cage option to go for - I should have mentioned it earlier?!
Mine's a single pivot (C'dale Prophet), sorry, can't comment on the VPP question. Very nice mechs though, nicely tucked out the way and very solid - the action's a little "agricultural" (I have matching Saint shifter), but very reliable and robust
