Has anyone replaced an M442 with a Alvio M430? Is there any major difference between them coz they appear to both take 118mm BB's.

Going shopping tomorrow for a new chain set so would appreciate some advice upfront.

I'm a bit of a newbie to changing these things so any advice will be appreciated - Cheers 🙄

I would imagine they will work fine, the 430 is the latest version and looks pretty good. But, do you need all new cranks or just the chain rings?

I seem to remember from your last thread that you just wanted chainrings. It may work out cheaper to buy the whole set admittedly though. If you do give me a shout as I was looking for some cheap octalink cranks to replace a broken one.

You will need a crank puller (or self extracting bolts) to get the crank arm off the BB.

The 410 should also fit and probably has the same rings: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=46023 and you could just keep your cranks if you prefer.

The 430 is about £8 more and is probably a bit of a stiffness/weight upgrade though as it is a newer design.

Hi, I've seen Alivio 430 crank sets on a website for about £30 including postage, the 410's are priced about the same. Having looked around i think if i bought the 22T and 32T rings separately for the 442 i'd be about the same so might change the whole lot.

If i do i'll definitely let you know about the old cranks although the crank arms are a little scuffed, mainly from my shoes rubbing the paint off. If i'm getting rid of them i can post a pic and you can let me know.

I'm not too bothered about a slight weight increase and if they are a little harder wearing than that would be an added extra.

I thought the 410 was only 7 or 8 speed where as the 430's are 9? maybe just misread something somewhere 😕

Going to have a look in my LBS tomorrow at the 430's and if they will fit i'll get them ordered as they're about £20 more from the shop up the road compared to on-line.

Funnily enough i'm off to Evans tomorrow, might have a look at the 521 at that price, depends if they take a 118mm BB. I've a sneaking suspicion that they need a bit extra clearance and use a 121mm BB.

yeah, I have a deore one, not sure which, & have a 121mm bb. think it depends on the frame though.
