So I have just bought a set of Shimano M8100 cranks. They come brand new and boxed. I have also purchased a chainring to fit but there's no lock ring tool supplied with the cranks. So is the tool supposed to come with the cranks or do I need to stump up another £20 or so for it.

I've bought two sets and one came with the tool and the other without. But I think they were both unboxed from merlin.

Initially I'd bought a cheapo one from eBay which was perfectly functional.

I've been buyingots of Shimano cranksets lately, none come with the tool.

This works a treat, doesn't take too long from China or you may find someone with UK stock for a few more pounds.

There's boxed XT with and without the tool, the cheap blue one off eBay is decent, best £6 I've spent.
Fwiw Unite chainrings chain retention is poor, back pedalling can make the chain come off at the bottom of the ring, only happened with the Unite, no other ring I've tried did it.

Got one with an XT crank a while ago, seems to be a bit of a lottery.

If you're anywhere near Bournemouth you can borrow mine if you like.

I used the blue tool from eBay yesterday successfully, did the job perfectly. Bit of a worry with the brand name!

I haven't had any issues with the Unite chainring on my Trek Slash

I've not experienced this.

Well it was the case with my full M8100 drivetrain, barring the ring obviously, on boost hub, standard 52mm chainline cranks, 435mm chainstays, any backpedaling in the big cogs resulted in chain being dumped off the ring from the bottom, upper chain guide was no help at all, whereas Burgtec and Blackspire rings have worked flawlessly, refusing to let go.

Bottom bracket / centerlock disc tool works fine for fitting m8100 chainrings
