I am old school, still rate square taper. But my town bike has an LX chainset with external BB and it's wobbly. What is a good replacement BB? Or should I just go for a 20 quid shimano?
Shimano
Stick with a 20 quid Shimano. Not much better for the money.
Well that's simple. Ta.
I've had a Shimano Saint bb in various bikes for a good few years. Actually I left it in a bike I sold last year but it was great. And gold!!
Hope if you want to be fancy, but £27 for a GOLD Saint BB is a bargain!
got a hope in my fargo. 8000 miles in 2 years. still going lovely.
but 20 quid shimano are pretty reliable too.
Hope used to wear bb's out very fast never had to do a bearing yet on hope one. Oldest one is 5-6 years old.
Just get a Shimano one that needs the same tool as the one you are removing.
When I was commuting an xt bb would last less year. This might seem OK but my commute was about 3000 miles a year. Deore bb lasted about 6 months.
If you do less miles they are probably OK but do not last that long.

2500 ish miles for a BB in all year round use sounds pretty good to me.
I’ve had Hope that have lasted ages, but Shimano are much cheaper and not much worse.

This is a good point. The new XT ones need a different tool, for example

Same here, I bought the tools to take mine apart so I can clean it. I pop the seals and clean the bearings and put it all back together. From time to time I have to buy the plastic seals that go over the bearing, as they wear down and don't protect them as well, they are a couple of quid.
Shimano xt bb are OK as long as you keep using the bike. It's when you stop using it, water pools and the bearings rust.
If you plan to keep it a while, buy hope, it will pay for it's self eventually. Or swop it out when you sell it and put it on your new bike. Just don't buy orange! 🤣
Chris King. Still using one from 25 years ago on kne of my bikes.
Ok so slightly different tack if I may as OP. I'm not wedded to this crank. Are shimano cassette bottom brackets (square taper or hollowtech 1) still the most durable of all?
