If some idiot forgot to thread the chain through the derailleur before connecting it, using the only supplied connecting pin, what could that moron do seeing as it's nigh on impossbile to re-insert the new pin once the introducing part has been snapped off??

Good idea, however said idiot has already disconnected the chain and has been left with the now snapped pin.

Can't you just use a chain-tool to disconnect and reconnect it at a normal pin? Presumably you'll need to insert an extra bit of chain anyway.

Ah... C'est la vie. I find these a much better option. EDIT:- also available for other speeds.

I've used a chain tool to reconnect Shimano chains using the existing pins. They tell you it can't/shouldn't be done but IME it can.

Order a pair of KMC or YBN quicklink for rejoining the chain, and keep a spare for emergency repair.

Then you can detach the chain whenever for cleaning.

Same as Cheezpleez broke and rejoined a 10 speed chain through an existing pin.
