Am i having a senior* moment?

I've replaced my own BB's since i can remember, but for the life of me i cannot remember seeing that the axle on a HT2 crank contacts with plastic before, instead of the actual bearing. I've gone throuhg various HT2 incarnations, Hope, Deor, XT, Saint and other brands, but only noticed it with the deore when doing some servicing old slx cranks!

Anyway - one of the external seals has cracked which means the cranks creak like a b'stard now, can you get replacement external seals, it's a shame to bin an otherwise working shell and bearing..?

other options include

1. new bike (obvs)
2. new BB, but what one
3. new cranks and new BB (spendy)

ta

*im not even 40, so could just be thick

Do you mean the plastic "top hat" looking things? Every Shimano external BB I've had has those and if you're not careful, they're easy to break (personal experience).

I don't think you can get spares to be honest, but I think I have an unwanted Italian threaded BB you could harvest them off.

Send me a PM and I'll pop it in the post on Monday if you want?

cheers John, that is it. I've been doing some digging and the "shim/top cap" is on all Shimano BB's, i've jsut somehow either forgotten that, or not noticed over the last 20 years - though having typed that i have vague memories now of bits of plastic coming out when pulling cranks off!!

Why would you put a plastic shim in between such a high stress area, im sure the Shimano boffins have a reason (no idea what it is)..

Very kind offer fo the spares, it's much appreciated, but i may just suck up and get a new BB, maybe Hope!

No worries, it's a good excuse for an upgrade! 🙂
