Does anyone have experience of using Shimano AM50 boots?

I have not tried spd pedals before, would these be good shoes for general mountain biking, is the ankle cover going to hamper my cycling at all for just ordinary mountain biking?

What are they like on normal flat pedals?

Interested in them particularly as they are on sale.

they'd be decent for general mountain biking with good ankle protection, though might be a bit hot for normal use. they wouldn't be much good with flats, softer soled shoes are better.

how much are they in the sale and where, out of interest?

I'm not sure what the AM50 loos like but I've got a pair of MT50s and they're spot on, comfy, not too hot and protect your ankle bones.

Not too bad for walking into the pub in at the end of the ride either

you can get them less than £75, though might be size dependent:

thanks for the price check, will buy carefully.

Appreciate the comments on the shoes, they seem pretty useful shoes.

The AM50 has a recessed cleat fitting sole so you wouldn't get much contact between a flat pedal and the sole.

Quite a lot of our guys who work instore have bought the AM30 as an aggressive MTB style boot.

They have a rubber sole to make walking that whole bit easier when your off the bike. These are not a winter boot, but they aren't three bad in the rain! They're a snip at £39.99!

Hope this helps.

i like my pair they are good on the bike not tried them on flat pedals though?? comfy and grippy for walking in.
not hot at all cos they have lots of mesh panels, this obviously lets water in though so you might need sealskinz or boot covers if its wet out.(same as most other shoes tbh)

out of interest then, are there more waterproof alternatives, or just wear sealskinz?

I've got some AM30s, great shoe. The mesh does let the wind and rain in a bit, but I just tape the mesh up from the inside with gaffer over winter, makes a big difference. And wear sealskinz too.

I have the AM30s and they're pretty good for the £40 I paid. I like the higher ankle and I don't notice them being any hotter. I wouldn't use them on flats as there is not grip in the middle cleat section.
I also had the Spesh Trail 110 before, which were very light, stiff and comfy. Unfortunately the grips fell off the sole after 1 year.
