Just checking a combo will work.
shimano 10spd Sti levers will work with a 10spd mountain bike cassette eg. Sram 1070 as long as you have an old 8/9 speed shimano MTB rear mech. oh will have a 10spd Sram chain.
Is this right?
Does it just 'work' or does it work just as well as road mech. I.e. Can't tell the difference?
Yes, FWIW, I use 10-speed Ultegra STI with an XT cassette and an older 9-speed XT rear mech. Front mech is still Ultegra.
Edit: and a 10-speed chain with a 9-speed Powerlink ๐
Excellent, that's pretty much the set up I have been looking at but with a triple ultregra Sti and xt front mech.
Is the shifting slick and effortless like a full road shimano set up?
I'm not sure about the front mech (i.e. you might have problems) but otherwise it feels no different from riding a full road setup. Personally, I don't like SRAM chains - they seem to feel a bit "clunky" while changing gears.
almost...
for the rear, 10spd STI will be fine with a 10spd road cassette and a 9spd MTB mech. The 10spd MTB cassettes are slightly different so I'm not sure about those.
for the front you definitely need a road front mech if you run STI. MTB front mech won't work.
Are shimano Sti's not like Campag now that you can fine tune/multiple clicks between front mech changes?
I'm currently running Campag record 9 speed shifters with an XT front mech on a mountain bike triple. With no problems.
Presumably a shimano road triple font mech won't have the throw to deal with a MTB chainset (in this case Sram Noir)??
IIRC, you're correct.
Is there not a SRAM STI/Mech combo that would work?
SRAM don't make a triple road shifter. I thought they pushed compact instead??
Oh and right in which point?
That Sti are now like Campag and have micro adjustment so will work with a MTB front mech ?
Or
Road front mechs don't have the throw for a MTB chainset?
Cheers btw
Any other experiences?
