Evening all,
After some recent wheel and cassette swapping I realised I don't have 1mm spacers on either wheelset that I'm using at the moment (both with M771 cassettes ). Big standard Hope Pro2 hub and Am Classic hub that cane take 9 or 10 sp cassettes.
I can't remember
A) ever having seen a spacer in the cassette box
B) ever having had a problem with not having one
But if you look at a few sites the theme seems to be its best to have one in between the big cassette ring and the hub.
So I thought I'd check Shimano tech docs and looking at this there's no spacer mentioned.
The theory I believe is to stop the big cassette sprocket overhanging towards the spokes too much which can cause a few problems - but that's all fro reading various sites, including Sheldon Brown.
Anyone know the definitive Shimano recommendation?
Fed up with hours of inconclusive googling so hoping someone knows ๐
I never heard of this spacer that you're asking about.
I just bought a new bike with a 10 speed drivetrain. There was no spacer on it. I swapped out the SRAM cassette for a Shimano one. It fit just fine.
My XT cassette came with a spacer to go in the middle of the cassette somewhere, can't remember exactly.
10 speed road cassettes include a 1mm spacer, MTB cassettes are wider and don't need one.
Njee20 - that's the answer - cheers
