will a shimano road 10 speed chain work with 3x10 xtr 10 speed ?

If it's the latest generation XTR then I believe not but it used to work fine with the previous version of XTR.

Yes it will.
They are different - the outer plates are differently profiled to optimise shifting, but they are cross compatible (IMO with no discernible difference). I'm using an Ultegra on my MTB.

Don't forget that shimano road chains used to be directional. Latest ones are bi-directional. Double check before fitting.
