I need to drag my fat ass outside the house before it dissolves and fuses with the sofa.
Currently my best option for squeezing a ride in after work is to have the Mrs pick me up from the office and then drop me off somewhere far away, so I can avoid the miserable slog out of town and just enjoy a pleasant ride home.
So I’m looking for one way rides from the Peak back into Sheffield. I only know the route from the Norfolk Arms to Hunters Bar so anything which goes that way or along Abbeydale road will get me home alright. Where’s a good spot to be dropped off? Nothing life threatening, doable in the dark with good lights, as little tarmac as possible. I just need to spin my legs for a couple of hours before I completely forget how to do it.
Also, is there an off road route from Wharny and Greno into town? I only know Penistone Road to Fox Hill Road and if I ride out that way I’ll be smoked by the time I get to Greno village. Google maps shows a railway line to Oughtibridge and the Upper Don Trail but it’s unclear if there’s a rideable route away from the road.
Thanks
Get dropped off at Fox House pub, do the Eastern moors loop, and then come back across Hound kirk and then roll back into town?
It's not too far, but will feel like you've 'got out'
Rivelin-redmires-stanage is the other other option which avoids as much road as possible.
I ride blacka moor a lot for devil's elbow and piperhouse which is usually enough to knacker me out.
Fox House along Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow edges then across to Johnnygate Lane, up Cartledge Lane to Holmesfield and down past Holmesfield Park Wood, past Woodthorpe Hall (a bit cheeky), out by Shepley Spitfire and then on to Abbeydale Road. Can always cut through Ecclesall Woods to avoid the main road.
I forgot to check back on this thread, thanks for the replies.
I know all the names of the places you mention but I haven't been to most of them on a bike so I'll need to figure out how they link together. Maybe I'll do this on a weekend so I don't get lost in the dark and freeze to death somewhere.
I used to ride Blackamoor and Devil's Elbow when we were renting in Dore so I kind of know that area. I've been in Ecclesall woods on foot a few times, I wasn't sure if you could ride through it but that would be preferable to the main road.
I think I need to invest in some kind of navigation device.
Redmires, Stanedge Pole down the Long Causeway to Dennis Knoll car park - a little bit of quiet road (1mile) to Bamford Clough and down that (dodgy at the moment with the leaves on tarmac) to reach Bamford, onto the Yorkshire Bridge pub and then up to Win Hill and down via the Beast to Derwent Dam. Hardly any traffic - back to Redmires via the Long Causeway.
I’ve put the route I described on OS Maps for you here @sharkattack

That's perfect, thanks for that. At the end if I turn off Eccy Road onto Psalter Lane it's almost totally downhill all the way home.
The eastern moors loop and back via houndskirk mentioned above is good option

Commenting to save - my standard loop is normally up ringinglow road, couple of laps of Cannings then back via devils elbow, but I could do with inspiration to extend that / keep it from getting stale!
There’s much moor to blacka than devils elbow…
And a wander up Wimble Holme hill on to totley moor brings the cheeky climb up to the cairn then down the other side to sheepskulls. Plenty to entertain in that vicinity.
Cartledge Lane (down) is a great little trail, one of my local favourites. Not technical but smooth, fast and swoopy. It’s a nice climb up too. Sheep skulls straight down (next to the wall from the cairn) is great too, please avoid the left hand line if you can though, it’s across a scheduled ancient monument. But Bolehill downhill (behind Bolehill Lodge) is a great little trail as well. As is the trail right off Piper House near the top (bench to bench), though obviously not a bridleway. Depends how cheeky you want to get.
