Does anybody know how to configure a Garmin 1050 and Shimano ultegra so that one of the shift paddles can be used to ring the bell? Note not one of the bonus buttons on top, but reconfiguring one of the shift paddles instead ? I have set my left shifter to be gear shift next so I don't need both buttons on the left-hand side. I would love to be able to use the spare button for something else. I remember lots of YouTubers talking about how this was a great addition and freed a button to use for something else - I don't seem to be able to configure this spare paddle to do something useful.
Am I missing something really obvious here?
I don't think you can unless there's some hack outside of Shimano's app, the shift buttons are firmware locked to just be for shifting and not re-assignable for other things.

I fear you are right
I was just a bit surprised because I remember reading lots of articles about 105 di2 where people were advocating changing the left hand shifter to the mode gear shift next so that it freed up one of the paddles to be used on your cycle computer - has 105 doesn't have the bonus buttons. Suspicion this was a lot of journalists talking out of their backside as even if you could free up one of the paddles you can't actually do anything useful with it as you can't assign it to anything.... Unless 105 works differently to ultegra.
Can you not change the shifting buttons to a D-Fly assignment and then you assign that within your Garmin? I had GRX and you could def do this as I had sequential shifting on the right shift buttons and the left two were to ring the bell and flick through the Garmin screens.
