I'm finally setting up an indoor trainer (Elite Direto) and I'm re-purposing an ancient On-One Inbred to use on it.
The 9 speed cassette and chain I have are in a state and it's going to be a nightmare to get them really clean (I wondered about soaking them in isopropyl alcohol as a start).
Although I need to keep costs down, would it be sensible to start with a new cassette & chain and do folk lube a chain on a trainer when it's not going to get wet and dirty?

Yes you need to lube the chain. I'm using a dry one at the moment but not sure it's the best choice as it drops 'dust' everywhere.
If the chain/cassette work then I'd use till they die. They don't need to be spotlessly clean.
