Just had a quote from my new LBS for some work on my Canyon Nerve , Does this sound reasonable ?
Full service
Fit new group set drive chain (XT 2x10)
Bleed brakes
New linkage bearings
New Bottom bracket
Replace all linkage bearings
True wheels
hub service
Replace headset
£692
RRP for a full group set is £800 ish. So yes.
Wiggle has it for £399 so it may be cheaper to buy and fit yourself.
Does the £692 include supplying the drivetrain or just fit?
Set of linkage bearings could be £100.
I reckon it's half a days work for someone to do all that.
[edit] although to charge for a full service on top of all the other work seems a bit odd - they're either replacing or working on everything a service would cover in any case.
Does the £692 include supplying the drivetrain or just fit?
yes that includes parts
Wiggle has it for £399 so it may be cheaper to buy and fit yourself.
I found the group for £299 at merlin and did consider fitting myself but time is an issue

You must have a hellava hourly rate then - as £692 - £299 = £393... 🙂
£393.
minus cost of headset
minus cost of bottom bracket
minus cost of complete set of pivot bearings
minus cost of consumables for disk brake bleed
=
labour cost
if you ignore costs of any specialist tools etc.
Everything apart from the wheel truing and linkage bearings you could probably do quite easily yourself with the right tools.
Sounds like a decent price from the LBS though for all that work. At least if any of the parts go wrong you aren't faffing about sending things back to online retailers.
afternoon in the garage, some nice beers and a good album on the stezza: relaxing.
That price is good all in I'm pretty sure my LBS would charge more, you could break it down a bit like this
Groupset + Fit £500
Bearings + Fit £50
Wheel truing £15
Headset + Fit £50
Hub service £10
Bleed £15
Rest of service £52
Supply XT 2x10 = £299 at merlin prices
Fit xt 2 x 10 = £40
Bleed brakes = £40
Supply and fit New linkage bearings = £100
New Bottom bracket(part of xt fitting above)
True wheels = £40
hub service = £10
Replace headset = hope pick and mix? = £60 for headset and £10 for fitting
Total £599, but thats with an xt groupset at merlins prices, if the group is at wiggle prices, then its £699.
Doesnt sound too bad to be honest, assuming you really need all that doing.
Does the Full Service part include suspension?
RM.

pipedreams ....i have a 3year old and newborn twins
Does the Full Service part include suspension?
nope, but thats just been done
Cheers for your thoughts peeps, sounds like the price is fair (its a large shop not a back street so i do expect to pay a small premium)
If your anywhere near Bradford try Firths Cycles in Queensbury, it'll be a whole lot less. Smaller, independant bike repair shops with lower overheads, the bigger shops have lots of costs to cover.
Has no one said "you could buy a bike for that"? Slacking guys.
RRP would appear to be £500 for the group set (according to Merlin) so price sounds good.
Do you have it stated BB and headset you will be getting for that?
Hub service - are the cup and cone or cartridge bearings? If the latter than not a lot you can service but replace bearings so make sure that the parts are included. That price could easily grow another £100 if some of the parts are bottom spec or not included (eg hub bearings).
Sell the bike on eBay as occasionally used, fantastic condition...
Just a question - what is wrong with the old groupset?
At very least you should be able to sell the cranks, shifters and possible the dérailleurs.
Oh and make sure you ask for a re-usable quick link on the chain as it will be a shimano chain won't it?
What crank is it? I have some unused triple rings kicking around somewhere - from the M780 chainset.
