[Closed] Serious mud bath at Cannock Chase and a bad case of cable rub damage! (Pic)

Decided to visit Cannock Chase for the first time to do the 2 trails 'Follow the dog' and 'Monkey Trail' to give my new Boardman bike a run out. Had a brilliant time despite the hailstones and persistent heavy rain. Got completely plastered in mud, hit 30mph one one downhill and had a blast.

Left my spare set of clothes behind though so had to endure an embarrassing encounter with a poor McDonald's girl taking my drive through order whilst I sat there in my wet boxers lol 😳

When I got home I hosed down and cleaned the bike thoroughly and was most annoyed to find 2 areas of cable rub on each side of the fork where the cables got gritty and have rubbed the paint off (see pic below) 👿

Can you buy a suitable paint to touch up these areas before I put some tape on to protect them next time around?

If you're that bothered just buy some touch up paint from halfords. Otherwise just put some leccy tape on the forks

Will it go rusty if I just leave it?

Say hello to helitape. Don't bother painting it, it'll never look the same as new.

Don't most bikes have crown rub?

Won't go rusty, it's alloy not steel

Like others have said halfords touch up paint and then paint it. Just think of it as battle scars. Plus it shows you use your bike.

Tippex time 😉

The little pots (Humbrol etc) from model shops will work...only a £1 or so each

Lol is that it?? My less than 6 month old Trance X2 got messed up real bad in the Kielder 100. Tape it and ride it.

I know I know, it looks superficial but was still gutted after 1 ride so would rather protect it before it gets worse 🙂

Cable housing is too long if It's rubbing on the crown.

I think everyone suffers from new bike syndrome for a while. You will get over it i did. The fastest and best riders near me often ride the most beaten up bikes because they have been used.

It will get much worse on it so let it go. Hellitape it BEFORE you take it out is the best advice. Mind you even when you do sods laws says you miss a bit.

"Cable housing is too long if It's rubbing on the crown"
"Don't most bikes have crown rub? "

Mine don't have rub, though I route all the cables the opposite side of the headtube to the shifter/brake lever. Was a PITA cabling up my latest frame, was fairly obvious the guides were designed to run it the other way

Many bikes I've seen come new with the cables/hoses running the same side of the headtube as the shifter/lever is, and more often than not I notice they have cable rub

PITA to reroute if you're not re-cabling all the gears, so probably best to helitape rub areas for now.
I've also found park-tool 'glue-less' patches very good cable rub protectors

Did Golf a lot gave up as biking more fun 🙂

Have biked for many years but just suffering from 'new bike syndrome' as another poster said. Been 8 years since I last had a new bike but the 'hopper got battered. Sure this will end up battered too, just miffed my pearlescent Boardman is already marked boohoo lol!

Cheers all, feel less bothered already to be fair - looking forward to going Cannock again though, was better than I expected as more of a Peaks trail kinda guy normally, will definitely go back sometime for another blast 😀

so had to endure an embarrassing encounter with a poor McDonald's girl taking my drive through order whilst I sat there in my wet boxers

Spelling correction - it's 'drive-thru'
Was the embarassment due to the boxers, the poor girl, or the choice of restaurant?

"Don't most bikes have crown rub? "

No.

I crashed and dented a new frame once within 500metres of it's first ride. Still happy with it 8 yrs on.

First time I rode Cannock, was in the ice a few winters ago now that was interesting! I took a group there on Thurs and it was a hoot if not a little sketchy in places (numb nuts here had rushed swapping his tyres over and had my front on the rear etc).
