i heard a little rumour that it is possible to make cups from a 1.5 external headset fit a semi integrated headtube with a bit of bodging
anyone got any hints or tips on this

I think Nuke Proof are bringing a head set out that does just that, 44mm headset with 1.5internal for taper or 1.5 forks.
