looks like a crack in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of a weld to me hard to tell but i'm assuming the flange bit is welded to the tube

but my long a go background is production rather that physical met'

Looks a bit suspicious - almost looks like tube section has moved wrt the welded-on clamp, and the line is where the weld ends.

That's not welded, it's a one-piece forging.

well it does look like it my lord but Bez is correct - just looked it up and web sites says its a one piece forging
