Doh! I've gone and put a horrible little scratch in my stanchion. It's only 2mm long, however it does have a little burr on it. I have read that you can remove burrs with wet and dry paper.
Any idea what grade of paper I should use?
If you can feel roughness, a very fine 1200 grit or higer W&D and CAREFULL remove the burrs, then fill with nail varnish (Get some to match the stanchion!) and let it dry overnight, then smooth off again the next day.
Note - I've not actually done this but I know a man that has!
I used the green plastic washing up abrasive for pots and pans to smooth off a burr.
It didn't touch the finish on the stanchion.
Gentle rubbing and the pad kept snagging the burr till it was gone.
Very fine wire wool works too & then apply the varnish.I have actually done this & it works fine.....
All sound like scary stuff. But needs must.
I did as PeterPoddy said and it seems to have worked fine. Stanchions were really worn and leaking oil before.
Thank PP worked treat.
cor would that work on them horrid things u end up wi on fox forks???
Just to add, someone mentioned using the convexed surface of a spoon on the burr first. I did this gentely and as much as possible before finishing off with light wet and dry. This way you avoid creating a slighly notch in the curve of the stanchion (thus letting in more water etc). Superdrug sells nice and cheap sparkly gold nailvanish ๐
PP - Im popping the cheque in this week (forgot last week)- just incase your wondering why it hasnt come out yet.
