Getting to the advanced stages of planning our Scotland trip, plan looks like a day in lakes, 2 in tweed valley, 3 in cairngorms of which one off to fort bill and 1 day in peaks. Any suggestions on what to ride in any of the above locations and where to stay very welcome!

I know there are infinite possibilities in each of those places and probably loads I've left off but what would you do and where would you base yourself if you had a short time to spend?

That is another question, I have been told late May is the best time, and also that September is the best, midges being a factor I hear!

Sounds like a cool road trip! Whereabouts in the Cairngorms do you intend to ride? You can't really go wrong but in my opinion the better riding is found at the Braemar side (Glen Derry, Beinn a Bhuird, Lochnagar, Glen Callater, Morrone, Quoich, Capel Mounth etc). I wouldn't recommend staying in Braemar but Ballater has a great bunkhouse (Habitat) and a big more choice for eating.

2 minute ride from Glentress & 10 minute drive to Inners.

I've been going at least twice a year since 2011. It's a cracking B&B, great bike storage, really nice rooms and amazing full English for breakfast!

I've been up in May & September and always had a great time.

Email Alasdair / Pauline to check availability.

Peebles is nice for the Tweed Valley. 10 mins ride to Glentress. 10 mins drive to Innerleithen. For more natual trails Gypsy Glen can be started and finished in Peebles. 20 min drive to the Pentland Hills. Don't know what Cairngorm biking is like, but the West side is better to get to Fort William for the day. I would say Aviemore. Laggan Wolftrax is on the way to Fort William.

Lot of driving. I'd say ditch the Lakes and Peak and add days in Scotland. Based in Kingussie gives access for Fort W day, Laggan, Cairngorms and Ben Alder. Better though to drive via Glen Coe - Devils Staircase and Kinlochleven to FW, the head across through Laggan to Kingussie. Lakes and Peak are great, but if going to Scotland, maximise your time. Yorks Dales better than the Peak anyway IMHO.

I have stayed here before:

It's pretty decent.. Its only a short ride along the bikepath to Glentress and Cardrona..

Cheers all, all duly noted!

The idea of peaks and lakes was to break the driving down as they on the way up and down, so we didn't loose a whole day's riding. Long distance driving not an issue for me, drove 1k miles to italy solo in a single stint last year
