[Closed] Running a 9spd sprocket in a 10spd cassette... Anyone done it?

[#6786177]

Just measured a 15T sprocket from a 10spd XT cassette at 1.78mm wide, and the same sprocket from a 9spd version of the same cassette at 1.58mm wide. Also just measured inside the narrower plates on a KMC X10.93 chain at 2.32mm wide, and the same on an X9.93 at 2.38mm wide.

Basically I'm asking can I put a 16T 9spd XT sprocket (readily available and cheap) in place of a 16T 10spd sprocket (out of stock for months everywhere and more than twice the price) in a 1x10 setup and will it shift OK? I'm thinking that if I remove 0.1mm off each of the spacers either side of the 16T and it should all work fine. But has anybody out there done it and can confirm or deny it works OK?

FWIW, been running a 16T Dura-Ace 10spd cog in my 10spd XT cassette with 15 and 17T cogs removed and a 40T Hope T-Rex for a few months now, and whilst it works, its far from perfect. Shifting onto the Dura Ace cog is fine, but the chain is very reluctant going up the cassette shifting from it (lack of ramps maybe compared to XT cog?).

Been messing round swapping between a oneup 16t and a 9 speed XT 16t on my 10 speed XT cassette. Both change as well as each other and perform flawlessly.

No dicking around, just fit and forget.

In practice you don't notice the jump between ratios, forget the 16T.

Great to hear this! ๐Ÿ™‚

In practice, we're all different. Tried it briefly with the 15-19T gap, found it horrific! For most of my riding I want to be in a 16/17T cog on the back, without a 16 or 17T on the back, it was bloody infuriating!

Is the 9 speed one really narrower? other way round Shirley?

njee, well spotted that man! I didn't proof read it properly before posting...

Yes the 10spd is narrower than the 9. By more than I thought too! Seems it makes as good as no difference though going by others experience.

Not sure if the gear is narrower? Is it not just the air gap between the gears is slightly smaller on a 10 speed vs 9, which works because the outer links of the 10sp chain are a bit thinner than on a 9sp chain. Certainly there is no difference between 9 and 10 speed front chain-rings so shouldn't be any difference between the rears?

10spd cogs are definitley 0.2mm narrower than 9spd (I measured a few) as well as the spacers being narrower...
