schwalbe radials - compound choice

So given that these radial tyres are supposed to provide more grip, I have a question about compounds.

If you wanted equivalent grip to something like what you would get from a maxxis maxx grip tyre , in a non radial schwalbe you would go for the ultra soft compound, but given that the radials supposedly give more grip should you just choose the soft compound in the radial tyres?

ie is soft in a radial like ultra soft in a non radial, and ultra soft in a radial is like something beyond ultra soft in a none radial?

On the front, I don't notice the different in drag between a soft and super soft in all tyres. On the back there is a noticeable differnce.

This time of year in the wet and slop, always a super soft up front.

Been very impressed with the Mary radials, super soft up front, soft out back. Front is better than a high roller 3, a little bit toothier. Been running a DHR on the back for a long time now, Mary on the back has been quite the step up in traction.

Hopefully there will be a few other options from Schwable, Betty, TackyChan, Dirty dan on the way.

If it’s for the front, i wouldn’t bother buggering about and just get best grip advantage possible with carcass and compound, no?

FWIW, I’ve a MM radial ultrasoft on the front, it’s very good on anything mixed, wet or dry and rooty rocky. Not so good when it’s purely soft or wet mud.

On the rear, i imagine soft would be great with new radial carcass, but I’ve got a terrible tyre habit so have stopped myself buying one until something else wears out 🙂

Short answer… No. You pick your compound as you would normally, but then tune the feel and grip of the tyre using air pressure. The radial tyres are designed to be run at higher pressures (and without inserts) than a normal cross ply carcass tyre, anywhere up to 30% more pressure for the same grip basically.

Long answer…? PM me and I can go into more detail if you’d like, but got a lot of driving to do today so won’t be til much later on.

Thanks all - makes sense.

I just didnt want a mega draggy tyre, but sounds like I just go for my usual compound choice

Thats where I am with them.

The radial does give a very different feel. In order of harness for me:

Conti's = Harsh

Maxxis DH/Schwable DH

Maxxis DD

Schwable Radial = Damped

I normally run old-style Michelin Wild Enduro's on my 29 FS's; Magi-x front and Gum-x rear with the majority of my riding in the Tweed Valley.  I appreciate 'security' more than longitivity and not worried so much about additional drag.

Which Schwalbe pairing would be the equivalent?

Schwalbe's soft is between maxterra and maxxgrip in my experience, and supersoft is the same as maxxgrip.

A Mary in soft is surprisingly good on the front and handles very steep breaking and wet roots decently well. Barely wears too and is better on hardpack.

However, a supersoft is better on the really nasty stuff. If you're a FoD local, as an example I've only ever stuck the straight line on the sheepskull root garden in the wet with an ultrasoft mary.

I was going to @ Mr mboy but I see he's already replied, I'd advise just dropping him a PM seeing as the driving he's doing today will be selling schwalbe tyres.
