[Closed] SCANDALous INBRED commuter

So I need a new geared commuter as my current "gravel" bike is not for me (lets just not go in to why right now). I loved my Boardman Hybrid when I had that, it was damn quick, a reasonable riding position but had its faults and flaws (exposed cable route and only skinny tyres).

I'm currently searching around for a medium 18" On One Scandal (rocking horse poo comes to mind) as thats got about the right geometry and is light enough to make a fast commuter. I have a singlespeed inbred at home and I think that shape frame will make a good fast road commuter.

Requirements:
- I want a frame capable of accepting something up to 2.1 inch (roughly) 29er tyres as the roads in Cardiff are awful.
- It needs to be able to run mudguards or be adapted simply to accept them.
- The frame must be light - the scandal is 1500g, the inbred is nearly 2.5kg
- Threaded BB
- Not horrifically expensive. It doesn't even have to be pretty.

Please just give me your suggestions. Also if anyone is able to could they tell me what the Reach of an inbred/scandal is.

Oh, and it needs to accept disc brakes.

For the 26" frame

Scandal Effective horizontal toptube is 589mm for 16" and 602mm for the 18"
I have the 18" going spare but that would of course restrict you to 40mm tyres on 29" wheels

Thanks Doh1Nut.

I found the basic geometry online for a 29er, it doesn't state reach. By my understanding though ETT is measured differently to reach. Reach is quoted in most modern bike frames and hence I have been having problems comparing the inbred/scandal geometry to almost every other frame/manufacturer I've seen.

Thanks for the offer of the 18"frame. Need bigger tyres than that for wet, dark, pot-hole ridden Cardiff!!

Inbreds don't have mounts for (proper) mudguards, do they? And the wishbone seatstays and lack of chainstay bridge (IIRC) mean you're going to be reaching above-average levels of bodgeness to fit them.

If you want to find reach and stack you could use a calculator, eg: http://www.bikegeo.net/ Though I'd be a little careful—for instance, that one doesn't consider external headsets, so you probably need to add the headset stack to the head tube…

Inbred can take proper mudguard at the back, certainly in 29er format, if memory serves. Front is obviously dictated by fork.

Is there not going to be a new Scandal shortly? Check out the On-One Instagram.

Think the new scandal might not be as good as the old one for a commuter bike, as it's supposedly got a 66 degree head angle and trail bike geo, and I imagine 'only' regular 6061 alloy. No scandium involved to make it lighter I doubt.

gumstabber - On that note I have a green 18" V2 29er Scandal frame that i'm probably going to sell, just don't have the time to strip it down and advertise. In good shape with swapouts and about 1700g from memory. Not sure how good the mudguard mounting is though, don't think there's a chainstay bridge.

It'll probably have floppy steering slack modern marketing geometry if they want to sell any.

The original will almost certainly be better for the OP's purpose.

Here's the geometry.

Also the Scandal is the lightest 29er alloy frame I have weighed.

My commute of choice is a Cube Hyde Pro belt drive. 8 speed Alfine hub. Part of my commute is offroad and can be muddy. I really appreciate the zero (and i mean zero) drivetrain maintenance through the Winter. Takes fat tyres, and i have medium coverage mudguards front and rear, plus rear rack mounts. Quite heavy, so might not meet your specs, but i do recommend that you do consider belt drive.

Faustus - totally interested in your frame as long as its 29er and has vertical (geared) dropouts.

The new scandal is a much slacker beast from the reports - I already have a Stanton Switch9er - this would not make a good commuter!!!!

To fit the mudguard I intend to drill and tap a small hole (5mm diameter) in the top of the upper chainstay yoke - basically as if it existed from the beginning. If I decide not to do this then I'll jubilee clip the vertical section of the upper chainstay yoke area and fashion a plate from which I can suspend the mudguard mount.

I have looked at belt drive and was very tempted but they are costly to buy and heavy. Or light but very expensive - the age old problem of light-strong-cheap.....choose 2!
