I check over my bike befor and after every ride and fix things when they break etc...
But i came back from the ride today and was chacking it out and saw this:
Can it happen on one ride?
How much will it cost to fix? (or will it be cheeper geting new ones, they are looking a bit tatty though)
I think they are 2008 reba team if that make any difrence. also what is the difrence between the 2008 team and 2010 SL?
has happened to mine, i doubt one ride would do it, but no lube and grit perfect grinding paste.
I suspect your better off looking at Merlin or CRC and buying a new set, otherwise new uppers/crown/steerer assembly plus the oils if you want to fix. And then you might find out that the bushings in the lowers have seen better days.
That doesn't look like one ride's worth of damage, unless you've forced a fair amount of grit down below the seal last time. How do you clean the fork?
sell them as spares or repairs on the bay..
someone may want them for the lowers that way you recover something from them..
then buy new.
CSU are something rediculous like 180 quid.
They're buggered. Should've serviced them*. Could ride them till they die tho.
They'll go from looking (externally) fine to looking like that in one ride, for sure.
And you'll need new bushings aswell as CSU.
*people moan about foxes, but the service requirements for RS are pretty much the same. And I've seen FAR more RS like that than foxes. People not servicing expensive kit is a pet hate of mine. It's quicker, easier and less messy to change the lube oil in the lowers of some RS than it is to clean a manky chain!
Hi, that won't have happened after one ride, the arch on the lowers has caught a load of dirt on it and that's got between the seal and stanchion causing the concentrated wear at that point.
Did you just want the upper (crown steerer unit) or did you want them service and uppers replaced. Mail me in profile, and can quote tomorrow.
I must admit i have never services them, i do mean to service them but never get round to it(hinesight is a great thing), but i cleen the whole bike with bike was and a hosepipe (no jet wash, on saying that i used to use a jet wash and i have never had any problems but now i dont i have had loads)
I check the forks after the last ride and it defo was not there 🙁
looking at getting these Reba SL then finding the parts to service them my self and keep them for spare's.
I will send an email to TF tuning for a price for the parts.
LoCo - YGM 🙂
IA - I did'nt even know you have to change the oil, how do i do that?
I have some SID WC as well do i need to change the oil?
LoCo - can you also give me a price for servicing my RS SID WC as well 🙂
nezbo do a search on youtube, Sram have a lot of videos on how todo things, and if you go to the sram website there is documentation on how to do.
Yes no problems, will be in touch tomorrow.
As per mrmo, see the SRAM website*. Reading the documentation you got with the forks (also on the sram website) would tell you service intervals etc. Also a little common sense - would seem odd for the forks being the only moving part on your bike that requires no maintenance ?!
Those saying it couldn't happen in one ride. They are wrong. The wear happens over time, but the final failure of the last of the anodising and wearing through the bare metal CAN and DOES happen in one ride. I've seen it happen to folk's forks, on a couple of occasions.
*pet hate of mine number 2. Service instructions for SRAM kit on the SRAM website? Surely not! That's the last place I'd look! 😉
Nezbo, I've got some 2010 Reba Team Dual Air for sale, about four months use last summer till I removed them for a road race and never put them back on.
Also (just to keep this vaguely OT) I'll sell you them with Rochshox Suspension grease AND Stendec 15wt Crystal fluid, which is all you need to service the lowers (what the hell, I'll even include a lovely, full colour print out of the service instructions 😉 )
Email in profile if interested.
Before erm, forking out on some new ones why don't you just do a lower service on these? Get some new oil in them & see how they get on?
A mate has got some revs which have some of the 'gold' removed from the stanchion legs & it's made no noticeable difference to the performance. I thought the coating was just to make them smoother anyway, so won't stop your forks working & unless you've got some real scratches in there the integrity of the seals should be OK.
I'd rather spend £15 on some fork oil & an hour servicing them to see how they go, than just binning them.
IA Yes I see your point, however on closer inspection of the photo the 'pitting' does appear to be quite deep, suggesting more than one rides worth of wear from when the anodising went through.
But hey I think we're both splitting hair on this one 😉
Oh RRP on csu's is £220 according to my price list.
💡 RS Pike "need" a lower leg service every 10hrs of riding, TF does a service kit (oil n grease) for £15, its easily done - i'm guessin Rebas are the same, just different
I would be tempted to clean out and re-lube the lowers and see if the seals leak. If they dont then no problem. I serviced a mates pikes that had just got a little stanction wear. Lasted a good year with normal servicing and no leaking (after a year the arch snapped but stanction showed no more wear).
