Route help from Braemar

Hi all,

Got 2 days riding coming up based in Braemar with my partner. We are both on ebikes and looking for a couple of routes from the town. My partner is ok and managed Heartbreak ridge last year but that is on her uppermost limit. So really looking for a big country loop, no hike a bike please. Single or Double track would be wonderful.ย

Any suggestions most welcome as its an area I'm not that familiar with.ย

@sanny - good to meet you last week in Hawkshead. Just pointing you to this thread as I think you don't use FB anymore.ย

Thanks all. Much appreciated.ย

Morronne (sp?) is the obvious one. Head south along the minor road on the true left bank of the river towards Glenshee ski. Head right up the obvious LRT to the summit then plummet back to braemar

PS😟 only said plummet because it nearly rhymes with summit. It's not that hard or steep.

Being a Bhuird *might* fit the bill from the south west. I emphasise might. I pushed ( up) loads on my neeb, but it is probably mostly ( nearly all?) rideable on an eeb. Check McTrail riders video for details.

Coire Chash (streak of lightning?) might fit the bill... From glen muick. Easy LRT up towards Broad Cairn then supposed to be brilliant descent down ( not done it as we went round to Lochnagat instead so keen to get others' views)

Try the trail that joins up Slugain and Quioch glens? ( Not done it, but I'm sure someone here will have)

Up and down Glen Derry might be ok, but not mega. Very scenic

Part of the inner Cairngorm loop?

Various pretty easy access munros towards Glenshee, but the only descent I know from them is Loch Callater, which has more portages than HR

A good ride is Carn an t-Sagairt Mor (complete with crashed cold war jet) and Bealach Buidhe.ย  Start in Braemar, leave A93 at Invercauld bridge, rejoin A93 in Glen Clunie.ย  With ebike you can add Morrone as well.

  • Up and down Being a Bhuird from the southwest, very doable on an e-bike I imagine. Start from Invercauld,ย  T-Slugain glen to where it joins the Quoich river and follow a trail on the north bank of the river downstream, heading west (not marked on OS maps) to the start of the single-track climb. The Ballochbuie estate from Invercauld bridge has gorgeous scenery and easy double track heading for Balmoral. You can ride up past Ripe Hill and join the main track over to Loch Muick.

Enmac. I'm assuming you descend from Sagart mor by the "Lochcallater" descent I mentioned? My memory suggests that was a lot more techie than Heartbreak Ridge... Do you think it's not that hard?

T-Saghairt Mor descent is very stop start unless you're good on muscling up round boulders.

For the descent off Carn t-Sagairt Mor head northwest off the top by the wreckage rather than south to join the marked path.ย  You are heading for an old fence line which then joins the path further down the hill.ย  This avoids most of the boulders but is a bit off-piste for a while.ย  I guess it is more techie than HBR, it depends how happy you are with drainage channels.ย  As mentioned, once you get to the traverse above Loch Callater, your flow gets interrupted by some annoying boulders.

Beinn a Bhuird from the South West riding a Chas Roberts White Spider 18speed xt thumshifters with canti brakes and rigid forksย

When men were men and pansies were flowers, the descent did kill my arms but almost needing oxygen atย  almost 4000'

Great views just now 🌞ย

Nothing sags at all with Carn an t-Sagairt Mor...the "T" is pronounced as you can't have a "S" pronounced after an "an". TL-DR it's pronounced Taggart see also,"Tron" rather than "Sron" and "Trechda" rather than "Sneachda" after the "an". Braemar mountain simply won't rescue you in the event of a mishap if you pronounce your location wrong! Factย

@lowey

That was a smashing happy coincidence meeting you and your good lady. Like others have said, Beinn a Bhuird from Linn of Quoich is ace. Out and back for the win. Make sure you go to the top and look down the corries! I rode it again last June on the e bike. You will ride virtually all of it up and down. Just a very short push at the very bottom and near the top.

As an alternative lower route, you could climb up the fire road past Meall Gorm heading north then ride west up Glen Gairn. It will be bone dry at the moment. Short push to the saddle into Gleann and t sluggain. From there, take the singletrack that runs west through the trees following Quoich Water. More of a day out in the high valleys but nice. Or shorter would be up Gleann an t sluggainย

Or put and back Glen Lui and Glen Derry towards the Hutchison Memorial Hut. Real sense of big mountain grandeur.

Morrone is a solid quick blast.ย

Hope this helps?ย

Cheers

Sanny

If you look at Prostaholics Anonymous article on this very website, there are a couple of pics of Glen Gairn. One is in black and white.ย

Thanks all. My partner is nursing a leg injury unfortunately... So probably going to go with an out and back to the Hutchison hut. And maybe Morven.

Just a follow up. As mentioned Annie was nursing a leg injury but we managed to climb up to Carn Liath and Carn na Moine with the descent back through the forest then up to the Derry Lodge. Was a cracking day out and has really piqued my interest in riding the area.ย

Thanks for all the contributions guys. I've decided on heading up for a full week on my own later in the year to fully explore the area.ย
