Out riding last night and my Rohloff started to play up. When I changed to second, nothing happened! Mainly when changing up from first, but sometimes when changing down from third. As if it found an extra "forward" freewheel. When I checked and changed when stationary, it worked after back-pedalling a bit. Every other gear is fine.

Any suggestions?

How old is it? I had a problem with my Rohloff when it was new - around 10th gear - it had to be sent back for the changing points to be modified or something.

When did you clean/change/lube your cables last?
Try taking the click box off and manually changing the gears with a small spanner. You'll soon see if it's the cables or hub playing up.

How old is it and how much use has it had?

Agree on checking the cables, if they are a bit sticky then they dont allow the hub to index properly and fully engage a gear. I had a similar problem as you where I used to get a false neutral between 4-5. I could get the hub to engage by tweaking the shifter a little bit each way. I replaced the cables and it sorted it. When I hit the 'neutral' it used to make pretty horific noises, does yours do that? Also remember to ease pressure of the pedals when changing gear.

I bought it about a year ago at 6 months old. It had new cables 6 months ago and an oil change 3 months ago. Will check it manually though. No noises though, it just spins.

Rohloff say don't lube their cables. They have a Teflon liner that doesn't require lube.

Having said that, the only problems I've had are with the Rohloff cables.

Thorn recommend 5mm brake outer and 1.1mm gear inner as a better solution. It's what they fit to all of their bikes.

Cheaper too.

Definitely check the cables. Remove the box and twisting the grip they may seem fine but when the box is refitted to the hub the problem returns. It'll be the cables.

If using Rohloff cables I'd be replacing them quickly. Nothing but trouble for me.

Standard Shimano lines are good. Use brake outters if you want a friction free run IMHO.

Had two hubs and sold them both as I couldn't get on with the shifter. The hub was ace.

Cables on my Thorn are nearly 4 years old and have received no maintenance at all so I would also go with their advice if you are going to be changing the cables. Also look on the Thorn forums in case anyone has had similar problems.

Rohloff cables are pap. I didnt like the brake outer/gear inner solution either as it gives a spongey feeling shifter. Best solution Ive found is XTR cables with full length outers. Really easy smooth and snappy shifting that doesnt upset the hub like the originals used to.
