MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
My Rev's have started to make a strange gushing/coughing/difficult to describe noise as they return from compression and I'm not sure what the problem is. Could they be a little dry? Apparently there's not a lot of oil in the lowers so is it possible I need to perform a 'lowers service'? I've had them almost 2 years with no servicing to date. I'd be happy doing a service on them myself as it looks simple enough, just hoping that I don't need to fire them off to TF or anything as I could do without the expense TBH!
Any advice appreciated, cheers.
Air Revs? Which side was the sound coming from?
They are certainly due a service but I wouldn't worry too much about the sounds...my Revs were always a bit asthmatic sounding
Hard to tell which side the sound's coming from, only noticed it while riding. Air rev's though, yes. They've been great until maybe the last month or so... Maybe 'wheezing' is a better description of the noise?
At that age they NEEEEEEEEEED a service!
The noise is probably the crappy old oil in the damping side struggling to do it's job. A basic DIY oil change can be done pretty cheaply, and takes about 1hr the first time you do it.
That's replace damping oil, strip and relube the air cartridge, clean and relube lowers, reassemble)
Either that or off to TFT/LoCo with them pronto young man! 🙂
have you turned up the compression damping lately? they tend to sound more airey (if that's a word) with more compression damping on
rockshox recomend a lower leg service every 20 hrs use!
i find 3 times a year enough though and with a full service annually. you need a full sevice to replace all seals and check bushes etc. ive left fork unserviced before and had major problems with them later on ,so i always keep on top of servicing now.lets face it,fork are ridiclously priced nowdays so its best to look after them.
Not wrong about fork prices mr b! I had Fox Vanillas on my last bike which were amazing for four years, again without any servicing, until I sold the bike. I gather they are still going strong (a friend bought the bike) so I have been taking the 'service every 3 minutes' advice from the manual with a pinch of salt. Seems with the Rev's I should've taken more heed!
beanleripper, the noise began after I ramped the rebound up for a slower return rate but has continued no matter how much is dialled in now.

Just becasue you did it doesn't mean it's right! I can 110% guarantee you that if you'd serviced them, you would have felt an improvement! 🙂
i had fox van 32's from new, did'nt service them for 14 months and the stantions grooved ,so i had to replace the uppers (expensive!) but they were never right afterwards.
ive just bought a set of revs and will be doing a lower leg service every 3 months, theres a step by step on bikeradar for revs and its not expensive then i have my LBS do a full service once a year for £45.
Guess I got lucky with the Van's judging by your experiences! I do like to do my own servicing where possible and a lower lube looks quite simple on bike radars step by step so I think i'll give it a go. If that doesn't do it then I'm probably just going to have to bite the proverbial bullet and get them serviced properly.
£45 seems ok actually, certainly compared to TFT's £89 plus postage. For some reason it never crossed my mind that my LBS could service them! Time to check out All Terrain's service pricing I reckon.
Cheers guys!
not all bike shops will do them. locos prices are'nt too bad though.
