I'm in need of some replacement forks and a little short of cash. I need 100mm travel and to be honest I'm a fairly crap rider so no need for anything too special. I've seen the Recon Silver for £120 and thought this might be just the ticket. I'm not too bothered about the heft and the coil spring should (??) reduce maintainance?
So, should I opt for this fork or can anyone suggest another? It's to go on a Sanderson singlespeed and rigid's not an option I'm afraid.
Any thoughts appreciated, cheers, Windy
Not a bad fork. Tough and simple. The damping is basic so it won't be very plush but you won't break it
For that money I'd go secondhand. A better specced Recon with the gold alloy stanchions and proper Motion Control damping can be had for under £100 easily. For your money a decent Reba 2-4 years old would be top of my list though. It would suit the Sanderson perfectly. They do go for that price and as long as the stanchions are fine and it's had a service or two in its lifetime it's your best bet. 🙂
I think it's just a renamed Tora. Tora was a good fork, a bit on the heavy side and the coil spring might need changing depending on your weight. Regarding the maintainance side, coil spring will be lower maintainance then an air spring and less to go wrong as well, however in 3 years of owning a Reba and now a Revelation the air spring works perfectly. My mate had a problem with the damping unit on his Tora but his had a turn key lockout one, not the Motion Control. You will still have to clean it and check the oil levels as they still can wear out if you won't look after them. For that sort of money you can buy some good forks second hand. I would sell you a serviced Reba for that sort of money but I'm away from UK at the moment. You would get a normal Recon for that money as well. Have a look at air spring models as the solo air spring or dual air spring is good and a new set of o ring if it goes wrong is only 8 quid on ebay.
