I was out riding with a mate today and on the way home I realized that my shock was looking a bit deflated. When I got home I pumped the shock up, to no effect. I then deflated it and tried again. My shock pump was registering about 300 psi...which is about right for me as I'm a tad chunky, but the shock itself was hardly showing any travel. So I emptied the thing and removed it from the frame. I was very careful about making sure I'd emptied all the air out, but when I removed the debonair outer sleeve.....well, the bang was loud enough to bring my wife out of the house to find me counting my hands to make sure they were all still there! What did I do wrong? Any idea what's wrong with the shock? It seems fine now but I'm supposed to be going out on a big ride tomorrow. Am I doomed?
When you let all the air out did then compress it to make sure there was no resistance?
Yep, it was completely sucked in. Seriously scared the bejeesus out of me when I pulled the outer sleeve off and it went kablooie!
Maybe a blocked port between + and - chambers? When i recently serviced mine i was a bit generous with the grease and had to bounce on the bike quite hard to unblock it. That scared me for a moment because i thought i broken it.
This.
Turn the volume up. 😀
if you'd emptied it by just pressing the valve and letting the air out without cycling it then it would suck down and there'd still be 300psi in the negative chamber under the sleeve...
If it's compressing at full pressure there might be a problem with the middle o ring of the three on the outer of the can, this is the barrier between + and - chambers and easily damaged if you put the sleeve on wonky.
Cheers folks!
The shock behaved perfectly yesterday, so hopefully the 'stuck down' fix has worked and I just need to man up and keep a larger supply of clean underpants ready! I'll keep a close eye on it to see if it misbehaves again!
All I need now is to figure out how my rear brake failed on the switchbacks down to Loch Lomond yesterday! Boiled away it did, and it wasn't really on a section where you could just say, "ach, I'll let the bike run for a bit"
Lose 20kg, or buy bigger brakes? Hmmm.... 8)
