I currently run C24 clinchers on my road bike and have no complaints at all, however I always fancied some deeper rims and trying tubs. With the current sale on, I reckon I can sell on my current wheels and buy the Planet X CT45s for very little extra. They should even be a little lighter (despite being deep dish).
Has anyone ridden both wheels and can offer a comparison? I'm sub 70kg and like hills, don't road race (yet, but would like to have a go some day) but have done a few 10 mile TTs.
Tubs is a pretty bold move if you aren't racing.
I know plenty of people that ride on tubs, but I wouldn't. I have raced on them.
Clinchers for everyday riding for me.
Personally would stick with the Dura Ace wheels, they are a good wheel. Yes the planetx's are deeper, but on a windy day you will be pushed around, and find the bike slower to change direction. I run 38's which are considered shallow, and I don't like them on a windy day, so 50's or 80's would be horrendous.
GO tubeless!
There are a few road tubeless rims and tyres out there now,
I would look at Stans wheels or Shimano.
They ride like a tub, but less hassle if you flat on the road. (and a bit cheaper)
I been running Stans tubeless and really like them.
Even the other day when a big flint went through the tyre (my fault for using a MOD road that only open a few times a year and with all the rain washing shit on the road!)
It when down slower than a tube so I could stop with out damaging the rim etc, quick inside patch in the tyre and put a inner tube in, and limped/road home.
You would not been able to do that on a tub!
Don't! Stick with the Dura's, shallower profiles are better than a deeper rim in almost all circumstances. Those Dura wheels are great, one of the best wheels ever made IMO.
The c24,s are superb - try some cheap Chinese clinchers if you fancy going deep!

Thats what he's suggesting... ๐
Planet X CT45s
Stick to clinchers unless your racing as are a hassle to change.
Ok, sounds pretty unanimous... I'm not that worried about punctures on tubs, haven't had one in over 10k miles in the road with lightweight tyres and tubes. I did wonder about them in the wind but apparently the shape makes them better in crosswind. I often find my c24s hairy on a breezy day (Winking Man descent from Buxton to Leek has been especially bad the last few times)
