MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Ok, first off: I refuse to buy rebranded Chinese carbon (scribe et al) - although I am happy to buy direct myself.
Requirements: 40mm deep+
Under 1500g
CL or 6 Bolt disc
Tubeless
Wide enough internally to support a 40c, but not so wide I can't put 28c's on them for road touring.
Struggling to see past the new zipp 303's (either the s at 45mm and 1450g or the firecrest at 40mm and 1380g).
Anything else worth keeping an eye on? The winspace hyperx wheels aren't wide enough at the rim really?
Reynolds ATR X are worth a look
I built myself a set of Chris King R45 Disc hubs onto Light Bicycle WR45 (45 deep, 25 int, 32 ext) laced using CX rays and Sapim PolyAx nipples.
They came in at 1.49kg with tape and valves and ~ £900.
The AR45 flyweights (as opposed to the WR45s I bought) are more suitable for 28mm tyres and will save you about 50g. SO you'd be looking at around 1.44kg on hubs whose bearings will never need replaced.
Something from Pacenti? Can spec hubs and spokes, plus they have some good UK wheel builders?
The Reynolds are - price for price, shallower narrower slower and more expensive than zipps.
The hunts are too shallow and I'd like to avoid rebranded stuff - but thanks.
I'll look at custom builds good idea - see what a set of maybe 240s' with those rims would be?
Aren't some of the newer Zipps hookless? Might limit tyre options if so.
Daffy did you look at the AR465 at the time? Seem similar to the 45's?
LB will ship you a set with DT 240s for about £875 after conversion, or kings for more (but you add 100g).

Pretty light builds some of those if you're doing anything but the smoothest gravel? I wanted the strength for my build and also the v dodgy local roads and went with FFWD Tyro. So far so good.
I bought some Prime Black Edition 38s, use them for mostly road with gravel tyres on, just fitted an xdr freehub to get a 10t option. Bonus was that I ordered them through bike to work scheme so massive discount.
Daffy did you look at the AR465 at the time? Seem similar to the 45’s?
No - they weren't available at the time. Also, I'm not sure my eyes could ever get used to the Salvador Daliesq nature of their appearance.
@gray - my WR45s are hookless and I've been using them with GP5000TL 32s for almost a year. At the pressures you need for 32mm tyres, hookless road is just as safe as MTB hookless, maybe more so as there's less rolling and flex.
@Pedlad. Just because they're light doesn't mean they're not strong. My other set of Nexties are only 1.4kg and they've been around Afan more than a few times on 40mm tyres.
Light, strong, cheap - pick two.
Looking to pick myself up a set of these for the gravel/allroad bike, assembled in sunny Manchester.

How do you know which ones these are? Some brands are pretty obvious (Zipp no, Hunt yes) but what about others like Reynolds or Sixth Element?
I've got some alu Hunt Gravel X-Wides on my gravel bike at the moment, but am interested in something carbon myself, maybe even with Hope hubs (no good reason, I just like the way they look) so interested to see what you end up going for.
I can't buy the Reynolds rim, or their cheaper hubs (although their more expensive ones are i9 torches). They also use propiatery spokes. That's not to say they're any better - I have no issue with Chinese rims spun with sapim spokes to a good hub - but why would I pay scribe £1300 for something that costs £875 direct?
At the moment I'm torn between 303s's (45mm and 1450) and something from LB.
Just a bump to ask - new dt Swiss 240 exps, or carbon TI's. Same price, it's drop 30g on the wheel.

How are you getting on with these @daffy?
How long did they take to arrive from ordering the rims and what was the total price when they were delivered?
And any photos of them on the bike? are they on a road or gravel bike?
LB quoted me 14 weeks for a wr45 build. Remember tax comes on top.
I’m after rim only and gonna build them myself. I’m sure when I last looked I could get postage with tax prepaid?
I'm unsure about wanting something so deep, won't they be 'too' stiff offroad?
I sent less, far less - JRA Monitor's, alloy and 25mm internal - came in at 1600g for £400.
I have the Zipp 303S and absolutely love them. The ride on 30mm Pro Ones at 60psi is sublime, they have transformed my Defy, like some kind of witchcraft. Brass nipples, lifetime warranty, rear hub pick up is fine for me. Hard to see past them really. Think they are more like 1550g though
I'll add, I run the 50c's at 30psi.
Rim manufacturing is 9 of those 14 weeks. The build is a week only.
I don't know quite what you're talking about. Those wheels sound slow, shallow, and heavy for £400?
These farsport wheels trace Velo reviewed with carbon spokes looked pretty good. The ventoux wheelset he reviewed are road but I think they do a gravel set too.
There's a discount code in his video. They are around £1000
Did I mention the carbon spokes? Bling

I realise that you probably already know but GP5000 are for hooked rims only. The consequences of a blow off is worth the risk IMO. I've seen them put on some locally by a shop and when pointed out to the owner they were changed rapidly once the shop had learned about modern tech and the fact they'd be liable if it did blow off.
Similar with minimum tyre widths on some of the new fatter road rims needing 28mm. I've seen a 25 lose pressure and sealant. It may not have been down to the wrong tyre size but they were changed soon after and have never caused an issue since.
Light bicycle wr45 rims on dt swiss 240. No point spending more.
Plus the zipp are hookless so limited tyre choice for 28c
LB are usually slower than Nextie for rim delivery. These were about 12weeks. I don’t remember the costs.
FWIW – mine are also hookless and I’ve been using them with GP5000TL 32mm for almost a year without any issues at all.
Pic as requested.
Looks loverly @daffy! What frame is that?
Not disc, but I’ve got Zipp 303’s. They are bomb proof, very fast and surprisingly absorb a lot of bumps.
Not sure what the disc equivalent is now but I would certainly be looking at them

At your own risk. Moulded clearly on the sidewalls of your GP5000s are the words "Mount only on hooked rims". Just be sure to avoid baby robins/children's faces when it all goes horribly wrong.

More than happy for you to try and follow me down a rough trail.

They're coming in at £1600.
Had Zipp 303s and loved them, bike felt quicker, rode nicer and looked amazing but got some toe overlap going from 650b to 700.
They weren’t holding pressure tubeless going soft over night so I took the tyres off to put an extra layer of rim tape on. When I had the rear tyre off I found a 10cm bit of the rim edge was either cracked or not finished and I’d only ridden them twice so they were sent back for a refund, shame as they were lovely, thought about hunt limitless 42 but missed the last batch, probably just stick with my old 650’s now, once bitter twice shy.
is that a dropper post!?
Are we going to drop trousers and get a ruler out at the end of it as well you utter bore?
I’ve got DT Swiss 240 hubs in two of my wheel sets…… one 3 months old and sent back to the manufacturer. Road riding the freehub completely came apart, took the wheel off and the cassette / outer shell of the freehub had separated from the main body.
I managed to push it back on and gravity held it together for the remainder of the ride. But those wheels/hubs only used in dry conditions and prob a max of 1000 miles.
Recommendation from me is Bontrager Aeolus Pro 37. 37mm deep, 21mm inner width and tubeless was nice and easy. Mine are now used only on road, but they’re my wet weather set. Used off road with a 35mm tyre with no issues.
I also have the Aeolus RSL, £1k more expensive but certainly don’t perform £1k more than the Pro. The Pro will be used on my gravel bike when I eventually get the group set for it.
I’ve had the Zipp 303 Firecrest on my old rim brake bike, absolutely fine. Older graphics looked better. Don’t think there is really any noticeable performance difference between the Zipps and Bontrager. I also had the Bontrager Aeolus 3 tubular when I was a proper weight weenie. Again no real difference performance wise.
I’ve had the Hunt Aero low profile aluminium wheels, mine were ok and had no issues with the hub, but other riders I know had issues. Mine were used for
Off-road riding. On my Domane, with 33mm knobbly tyres, did the SDW and Ridgeway, Ridgeway was very muddy!

Just pointing out your post says £800-1200, but the wheels you like are £1600 and then you have a pop when I suggest spending £400 on a perfectly decent and well performing wheelset that weighs within a latte of the ones at 4x the price.
I’ve got the Hunt 44s with carbon spokes but wouldn’t buy them again. The ride even with 30c tyres at 45-50psi is extremely unforgiving - the wheels seem amplify every small change in road surface.
