Anyone who takes a photo of a road bike (or pretty much any bike) and doesn't put it in the biggest gear doesn't know what they're doing, but that's just ridiculous. Ruins everything.

[img] [/img]

I think I remember this, was an effort from fairwheels wasn't it? Yeah, let's spend a billion pounds and show how much effort we took to shave off 11g from the rear mech, but stick on 50mm of spacers. It's not even about the slam, it's about the sheer dumbness.

Again, instead of telling us all what you don't like, why not show us what you think is nice?

Quick, before your mum realises you're on the computer.

Not a particularly posh one or even my most expensive one but it is a Bianchi.

trailmoggy - nice!

Some nice bikes, but some fugly ones too. Deep section wheels look bulky, as do chunky mtb type stems...!

Apart from obscure stem shots it's the only bike on the site. 😥

Bloody hell, modern bikes are hideously ugly, aren't they?
😀

Oversized/over engineered frames:
Out of proportion, unnecessary, inelegant, but more room to display pointless logos.

Deep section wheels:
Another advertisers dream, harder to true, harsh to ride. Did I mention ugly? The cycling equivalent of platform shoes.

Matt black:
Emo for cyclists.
Go and tidy your room, stand up straight, get that hair out of your eyes and cheer up a bit. Not big, clever or hard.

Sloping top tubes:
You are not Joe Murray or Buster Gonad. (Unless you are Joe Murray, in which case feel free.)

Road bikes should look like this:
[img] [/img]

And if you all apologise nicely and admit you were wrong, we'll say no more about it.

What's with the chunky chain rings? Loads of them ^ look like they've been nicked off a disc cutter...

Liking that Raliegh. I'm not and never will be competitive so its all about the classic look for me. No pics of my Chas Roberts or Holdsworth but the Holdsworth will look like this when Argos finally return the frame 🙄 :

I do like traditional lookin bikes, all road bikes tend to look the same nowadays, you see a bike from a distance and think oooo I wonder what that is.......oh it's a spesh, oh its a trek or oh it's a ribble

Here's my entry for nice non-plastic road bike; my Serotta:

[IMG] [/IMG]

I'm a fan of old steel frames (this one's 2001), but I like the function of modern parts.

rusty you always get it 50% right

the raleigh is classy
right about deep section - unless TTing or on the track over 40mm section is a waste, and heavy
fully compact does look like you are riding a chids bike

but oversize frames are better than thin round tubing, the amount of flex that is present in an old frame is quite shocking when you actually ride one
matt black can be done well, as long as it's not everything monochrome

that cannondale is probably very quick but still makes me want to punch myself in the penis to make the eye pain go away

which in particular the riser stem? the stupid bar angle, the saddle, or the flat pedals?

lol the pedals - correct. Riser stem was upsidedown in that pic, I've sice turned it the 'right' way up - more rise 🙂 What's wrong with the bar angle? Educate me.

Owned by an mtber?

Apart from the obvious things above, the frame is at least one and possibly two sizes too small.

It's a 54cm whatever that means

It's a 56cm whatever that means

It looks more like a 52 or possibly a 54.
Tis a small frame, hence the large amount of spacers.

I've got a 56...

Yeah sorry cheeky edit after a trip to the shed - 54. I'm 5'10, is that not right then? I was thinking about a longer seatpost earlier this week, maybe that's why

There's no right or wrong, just that mountain bikers tend to opt for smaller frames.

I've got a Trek frame that is 56 cms and I'm 5' 8". I got it that big to have a longer top tube. 😀

So what's wrong with the bars then? Whole thing feels wrong in a twangy I'm gonna kill you if you take your eye off the ball (or brakes) for a millisecond kind of way but I'm used to an Orange 5 which is just slightly different. Still love it though

Evening Ed, all ok?

Hmmn, not sure I agree about oversize tubing.

I've had some really quite flexy older steel frames, and a few very unyielding ones too - I think the design and quality of materials matter more than the gauge of the tubing.

As to matt black, you're wronger than a Ralgex enema:
Matt black was introduced by cheapskate manufacturers as a cost cutting measure - far cheaper to anodise than to polish.
The fact that some people actually fell for it is a perfect example of human fallibility.

It looks cheap, heavy and ugly.
It's use on components is a sign of poor taste & weakness of character.
It's use on a frame is a possible indicator of hereditary syphilis, psychopathy & impotence.

Not mega money, and not mine yet, but quite tempted by either of these, I'll see what they get reduced to in the end of season sales.

I'd scho the comment above about Ti, i just don't like the look of it on road bikes, if it had as much manipulation as an alu frame, or was left tubular like steel then it'd look good, but the sort of halfway house with a mishmash of tube diameters and bi-ovalised downtubes just reminds me of this, my first 26" wheeled bike..............

I have the same cube litening as shown back a page but with plain carbon 50 mm's it's an amazing bike.

Fast, lite and stiffer than a sixty year old on Viagra.

Does this work? On my phone trying link flikr.

5'8 again but 50 here

Going back to oversize carbon tubing verses thin tubing, it all depends on how well and were they are made and how well butted they are

My giant Giant, XL Defy Alliance 1. Tiagra groupset with Sora brakes, I want to buy a new bike, but can't justify it really as I don't have the ability yet. Maybe when I can average over 30km/h consistantly!

Will treat myself to new shoes/helmet/jersey with some of the money I had put aside for the new bike.

lots of pics from Epic Cycles by the look of things (the nicely displayed ones with bare walls behind like jlfs).

Personally hate the look of the pinarello with its stupid kinked/bumped/assymetric tubes, all marketing fluff and visual differentiation like the old GT triple triangle.

Are we talking nice bikes, or just nice looking? I am a sucker for white, and I think this Canyon has a lot right (simple lines, nice colour scheme with matching stem and forks), and is also a sickening deal, £1000 for full ultegra and aksiums on a nice ally frame with carbon fork (and no I'm not affiliated with them).

[img] [/img]

Saw a Lapierre in FDJ team colours in a shop in France a year or two ago for about E3000 which I thought was stunning.

This frame but probably different build.

That Lapierre looks good. Quite long - makes the proportions look right
