Hi,

My road bike groupset is on the way out- Broken shifter, baggy mech, worn chain and cassette and a crank that frequently comes loose.

A tiagra groupset is ~£280 but a new saracen hack ( disk braked cross bike) is £550 or a new genesis equlibrium disk is £800.

The bike gets used round town and for the odd 50/ 120 mile ride. Its a steel dawes from 2001 and the head set comes loose as its had canilevers bodged on to accomodate the only fork I could find to fit.

It has mudguards, rack and a bike lock on all year round.

What would you do? I'm 6"4 so any suggested bikes should be xl or xxl

Cheers

Martin

£230 from CRC with the BC discount for the groupset, but I'd still go for a new bike. Aren't Evans doing the (upto) £250 trade-in offer at the moment?

I had the same dilemma, ended up ordering a new bike... when it arrives I suspect Ultegra Di2 will be a fairly major step up from the Sora that needed replacing 😆

The Evans trade in sounded interesting but it's bike price dependent.

So on a £1000 bike it's £75 off

If anyone else is interested 🙂

The ultegra problem is it can't be too nice or i won't want to lock it up outside in town 🙁

I had the same with my Roubaix recently - was thinking about one of the new ones but decided in the end that as I found my 2009 bike really comfortable I'd revamp it instead. Ended up going mostly with 105 with a touch of Ultegra but for less than the cost of a new Tiagra groupset by partly buying 2nd hand and also going with 10-speed instead of 11. In fact with the cash that saved I also managed to add a 2nd hand Dura-ace C24 wheelset (cheaper because it was 10-speed but also came with a crazy light Dura-ace cassette and GP4000 tyres for £200). The bike is now a lot lighter and is riding really well, for massively less than the cost of a new 2017 version of the bike would have been.

Think most of last year's sales bikes have now gone but might be worth ringing around a few dealers to see what they can do on a 2016 model if left in stock. My LBS sourced one for me that way at a good price.

I think these guys have an eBay presence (bikecomponentsuk?) and might be worth a call to see what they have in and best price for an over the phone sale.
