My dad wants to pick up a road bike and has asked for some help. Given he's in his mid-60s and really wants it for riding from home in Southampton around the new forest area I was thinking that something more comfortable than a race bike might work best for him. Any tips on what to look for? Audax bike? One of the Roubaix-style bikes most big manufacturers have? A CX bike? He rides a hardtail MTB so I'm not concerned about fitness, more about how comfortable he'll be.

Same rules apply at 60 as it does at 16, it has to light your fire.

Something like a Roubaix, Cannondale Synapse or Cube Agree will be comfier over longer distances than a full-on race bike without going to CX styles. Usual rules apply - try to get a few test rides in.
