So, just removed a 170mm reverb axs from a new bike as its too long & was boxing up to sell it on eBay. As it's too long for the box, I pressed the button & shortened it. Then I thought, should I de-pressurise it for posting purposes? So whilst it was about halfway down, I pushed the air valve to let some air out & white oil pretty much coated my entire desk & clothes, brilliant. is this normal, or have I in someway managed to shag a £700 seat post?

When servicing them some fluid does come out of the air valve, states that this is normal in the service manual. I've serviced 2 a few times now and had this everytime. Hopefully you've not released any more than normal as it was under more pressure being down.

Maybe worth getting it properly checked out before selling ‘as new’ ..
