Need to remove and replace a rivnut on the seatstays. However, if I drill it out, the shank will forever be rattling around in the bottom of the tube. Anyone know a cunning method of removal that brings the whole thing out? It's the threads that are dead!

theres no easy way to actually take it out and replace it.

i was thinking you could stick a bolt in it and file off the outside flange of the rivnut, but, due to the shape of the rivnut tube itself, it wouldnt fit out the hole its in!

my suggestion would be, if its still securely in the frame and hasn't started spinning, get it helicoiled.

If its still in there and just spinning them try screwing the pliers back in and pulling it up again...

I don't think it's possible, unless you jump up a size for the replacement.
Drill it out, let it drop and then fill the stay with expanding foam. No rattles and if you fill all the other tubes with foam you can ride on water. 😆

It's fast in the frame, it's just the threads that are fubar. I was thinking it was just a case of let it drop and glue/foam fx it in place. Helicoil is a nice idea but is there enough meat on a rivnut to helicoil it?

Anyone make a self tapping something slighly bigger than M5?

If its M5 have you tried tapping it out to M6. If its an ally rivnut I cant see why you cant do it. Just keep it well lubed when you tap it

might be worth a try. After all, if it goes wrong, it will be no worse than drilling it out!

you're right. I don't know why I didn't think of it. The taps have been staring me in the face. Worked a treat and took less than 2 minutes. Worked perfectly, although I could do with finding a dome head for it instead of the chunky socket cap that's now in there.

Cheers for the advice mate, I'd have been stuck without it.
