This is my Marin Northside Trail:

http://www.marin.co.uk/2007/bikedetail.php?ModNo=3770

It came with a bashring rather than a 3rd gear which was fine when I was only riding trails, but I'm using it to commute at the moment and find its top speed quite limited!

Is it a simple case of taking the bashring off and putting another sprocket on? Or do I have to by a whole new set?

Sorry for the numpty question.

im nopt expert but it all depends on your front shifter and front mach, if its only a 2 speed then it wont work for 3, but you may be able to forget about granny ring and just have the big and middle as your 2, but you may need some extra links in your chain. if it was me i would buy a bigger middle ring keep the granny ring and bash gurd job done

I'm *pretty* sure it's a three speed front mech. Changing the middle ring sounds like the best option though.

Spec shows an Alivio front mech, which I think can only be a triple.

So, new chain + new 3rd ring needed.

Adjust front mech height and outer limit stop after fitting new bits and ride it.

Oh, and the shifting from 2 to 3 chainring will be cr*p as you need a 10 or 12T difference (see Shimano Tech Docs) for the mech to work properly.

Hmm sounds like a bit more hassle than it's worth.
