Not 100% sure.

Do I need a 10 speed front ring or should a 9 speed work just fine?

I ask as I have a 32T Renthal ring earmarked for a 10 speed build ......

Should be fine. I've got 32t eThirteen ring on a 1 x 10 setup and that's been fine with a Sachs chain. The eThirteen ring isn't listed as being 10 speed specific.

I've got a Renthal 34t ring on my 1x10 setup. It seems to work!

I could be wrong, but I thought that gap between the links ( which the chain ring teeth slot into ) are all the same width across 8, 9 and 10spd, and that its the thickness of the links on the outer side which varies
