I'd bear in mind that while merino is a really nice fabric, if you get sweaty, it tends - beyond a certain point - to get quite soggy and then dries more slowly than a synthetic. If you want a good compromise, merino/polyester blends wick better, dry faster and retain the anti-stink properties of merino and also tend to last considerably longer ime, though I don't wear them for cycling. Seam position is going to be 'the thing' with that gig.

I have a few pairs of ISO BAA merino pants. They are extremely comfortable, but I've never worn them on the bike (Alpkit merino undershorts for that). However if you specifically don't want padded undershorts, I think they would work well. I get them from sportspursuit.com where they are often on offer. Looks like they are atm.
