Looking for a good lbs who can do the things I can't such as bearing replacement and wheel truing who doesn't charge 30£ to bleed a brake any suggestions appreciated thanks
Better off learning to do it yourself to be honest, there aren't any decent MTB focussed bike shops in the Burton area, Lloyds in Swad is about as good as you'll get.
I do most of it myself but wheel trying and bearings are not for my clumsy hands
I live in derby
Personally I avoid the bike shop on monk street (always seem clueless when I ask them to do something last time was fitting a headset), samways (can be good but seems to depend on the day of the week) and leisure lakes (expensive quote by the half hour rather than for jobs and never seem to give a straight answer on how long things take) For wheels I would give Mercian a try, Alvaston in derby, they recently sorted out a wheel I had built myself that needed a final true
Prob do the rest too but they are primarily a road / touring bike shop and (very nice) frame manufacturers
I normally combine any maintenance I can't do myself with a trip to sherwood pines and get Dale up there to sort it, dirt cheap and a top mechanic the cheap prices and total honesty make the drive up there and back worthwhile
Only other place I would recommend, but again mainly a road specialist and a bit far away, is Scott at ProBike in Hucknall, Notts
Thanks I've used dale before very good it's a pig of a drive up to pines though but deffo worth it
Each it's best part of 45 mins even from derby
Check out Mercian then they are pretty helpful whenever I call in (I work almost next door so that's quite often)
Having said that though most bearings are pretty easy to change, what are you changing? Wheels, frame if so what frame?
To be honest mate thinking more of the future for bearings - but got a wheel that needs truing and a hope m4 that just will not bleed for me lol
I use Holt's on Nightingale Road. Very quick turn round and well priced. Or Markenduro;-) If a bit specialist I do use Mercian but they can be slow sometimes.
Used to use Samway's but can be a long wait and have had a couple of issues in the past.
Not used them for a while but I know people who regularly use Holts and they're always pleased with the service.
Used the Swinnerton's shop at Cannock Chase a couple of times now - they seem pretty good.
On the few occasions I've used Holts they've been good.
Have always had good service from Samways as well.
Samways have always been good for jobs I can't do myself (faceing, reaming etc).
Mercian are always good for getting spares bin type stuff from as they always seem to be working on really old bikes (which is probably testament to the quality). Stuff like a 130mm axle and spacers to fit a fixie hub in a normal frame was no problem etc.
Lloyds in swad or Sheffield cycles in burton will be your closest.
If you're bothering to go as far as Sherwood Pines, what about Fearns in Matlock - only heard good things about them, and the riding near the shop is a whole lot better than Sherwood Pines!
There's also Buzz Cycles in Belper, who are new, but sound pretty good from what local people say.
Just had some stuff done (forks serviced and a rear hub rebuild) at Buzz Cycles in Belper - seem to have done a good job for a reasonable price and great service - very friendly too.
They've also got a few nice looking Lynskey frames hanging up in the shop ..... maybe I'll treat myself to a Christmas present!
Mercian for wheels, bit of a wait but always good work ime, and another thumbs up for holts. I'll second joe for fearn's, good workshop and friendly guys. Samways have never been to reliable for me. I must try buzz cycles I guess they are now my closest lbs. Langley coatings offer a good service if you need anything powdercoating.
