As i cant afford a new road bike i've decided to get a new wheelset for my on-one whippet and put slicks on it, im look for a fairly light wheelset thats durable aswell, looking to spend no more that £500 and thats including new cassette and skewers.

£500 will buy you a road bike.

£500 will get a pretty reasonable road bike. Certainly something quicker than a mtb with slicks on

I'd just buy a road bike!

But if you must: A2Z hubs, Open Pro rims (or Alpha 340s if you want to spend a bit more), Revolution spokes, 105 cassette, Mt Zoom skewers, GP4000 tyres.

No way would I [s]waste[/s] spend £500 on road wheels for an mtb, up to you of course!

The right tyres will save you loads of weight at 200gm, just get 717s on something half decent and save your money.

Sorry, shouldve said that the wheels might also be used to go off road at some point, just out of interest would road wheels fit in the frame and forks. i mean would i be able to get a pair of disc hubs built up with road rims. ive also looked at the superstar wheelset of trizoid hubs and crest rims, anyone have an history with these?

With 23c road tyres yep.

Yes, hence my recommendation. Although that precludes your ability to fit MTB tyres and use them offroad.

Just wondering if these wheels would be ok, 1 to fit my frame and 2nd with GP4000s, these also fulfil my fantasy of one day maybe upgrading to a 29er. http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/WPOOMAX/on_one_max_adaptable_maxle_wheelset_

They're pretty heavy, and I don't know what the rims are like, 23s may come up too small, may have to go for 28s or something, but there's plenty of clearance on a Whippet so you should be ok.

I'd still just buy a road bike.

I know i can get a road bike for that sort of money, and i know there are benefits of a road bike but my mtb with a shock for, mtb wheelset and mtb tyres is lighter that the road bikes available at that price.

Mavic 717 with a decent set of hubs A2z, shimano or hopes. 717 are narrow enough to fit some Conti Gator Skins 26x1.2".

I am abit confused by this post as I thought the Whippet as a 26er and folks are talking about fitting 29er wheels would they even clear the fork bridge.

I read that as recommend me a Weasel. Think I'm looking for interesting threads that aren't there.

spend the £500 on a 2nd hand roadbike or build one from 2nd hand f&f and 2nd hand parts. Got a lovely roadbike here I ride loads, cost about £500, all 2nd hand slightly used stuff from here, for a £1500 equivalent new bike. Then if you don't like it, sell it and lose a few quid. I'm a skint/tight bastard and VFM is my goal.

Blowing £500 on new wheels, tyres, cassette, skewers for the bicycling return you are looking for is illogical captain.

In all honesty, £500 would get you an alrite road bike if you dont want to stretch your budget. Have a look on pauls cycles, or rose bikes, or planet x, or ribble.

Even if a cheap road bike is heavier than your on one with fancy wheels, it'll still be loads quicker on the road.

B'Twin from Decathalon may be worth considering http://www.decathlon.co.uk/btwin-facet-3-id_8127608.html

Do your own research as I'm not au fait with road bikes.

If you're only running narrow road tyres yes they will.

My winter road bike is several pounds heavier than my MTB, but I'd never ever choose the MTB for a road ride!

That Canyon looks good.
