no not sex or drugs, but a vice i can clamp things in.
Has to be one that clamps to the bench as I dont want to have to screw it into the shelves where I am gonna mount it.
just want something suitable for a bit of bike fettling and general DIY stuff, nothing too industrial.
Was gonna head to B&Q tonight, but wondered whether there were better alternatives.
EDIT: and having a swivel ability would be useful too.
like this one, but 35mm doesnt look enough for bike stuff?

Try Machine Mart.
Why are you against screwing it to the bench ?
Ps that stanley looks bloody awful !
that stanley is exactly what i use (was given it) and it works great. wide enough to get anything bike related in.. use it to press bearings, hold the whole bike, hubs etc etc. you can lock the jaws in any direction and put whole weight on it, doesn't move.
Erm, I dont have a bench. 🙂
Wanted to clamp it to some shelves I have in the garage.
whats wrong with the stanley one? its adjustable to different angles n tuff, which would be handy if I am mounting in between 2 shelves?
see shelves in background here:
Och itll be fine for mounting to those shelves - youll tear the shelves apart before you get any good force ito it 🙂
was gonna put some wood betwwne the shelf clamp so as to not eat into the plastic. they are pretty heavy duty shelves though, not just plastic, there is a metal core.
Second hand Record vice all the way. I bought one of these a few months ago for home, perfect.

OK I will cover the shelves with wood so i can have a bolt down vice, now i just need something to clamp the wood to the shelves with something..oh wait a minute.....
Are you renting if not you could always build a plinth to surport a vice. I had a local fabricator make me one the only mod I had to make was to have a side surport made to bolt it to a wall as cutiing was making it vibrate like crazy.
I had one like fasthaggis. Problem with the swivel design was that when I put some useful force on it (extract a freewheel off rear hub) the vice swivelled, the freewheel remained.
Nice idea - not practical for me. Ended up with cheap screw in one from local industrial supplies place. Fine...
christ. for anything bike related i've found the stanley fine. you aren't dealing with anything big enough to need those huge bench vices.
^ yes i use it for exactly that, many times, you've got a bad one or not tightening it enough.
get a proper old record off ebay
I've got one of these, I've had it 30 years and it should see me out.

2nd hand bench vice, 450mm sq of 25mm Ply, 4x2 softwood, Workmate.
screw softwood to ply, bolt vice through ply, clamp in workmate.
Should do for most bike related stuff and you can get 360 access.
nth the "big old Record" idea.
Before I had space for a proper work bench, I built a stand for mine out of 2"x2" and 18mm ply which had a compartment in the bottom with 20kg of gravel in it. Actually rather more solid than the bench I now use...
Are the record ones worth the extra over something like this?

A second hand record (generally better than a new one) is less money so well worth it.Are the record ones worth the extra over something like this?
To the OP, get a bench. Makes jobs much easier especially when using a hammer which appears to be your only tool :). Looks like you have the space.
How did you get the fork to levitate like that?
Record FTW. Bigger the better! Amazing how many times you use it. Overkill of course, but just nice to have 😉
Stuck post? Let me see you twist the frame in that Stanley.

Should hold pretty much anything in place.
Get an old record and then build a proper bench to put it on.
Get an old Record vice. Mine's 60-odd years old and is absolutely bulletproof. Don't bother with any of the cheap chinese ones available on ebay. Without exception, they're crap.
Make sure the bench it's bolted to is strong enough to take some s--t as well. Old kitchen tops make for excellent workbenches.
Yep, yet another vote for an old Record.
I have a couple of ancient ones, which will last me out.
You can replace the jaws on them if you buy a vice with damaged jaws.
Record here too, had a Clarke in our workshop crack in two when trying to remove a BB, not recommended.
Ok then so I need a record.
Recommend me a bench to put it on? 🙂
A bench?
As someone said already, a B & D workmate, screw the vise to a plank with a strip of 2 x 1 underneath, clamp in workmate. Which also works for a drillstand. I'm wondering about a grinding wheel, but that's a lot of rotating mass if it goes tango uniform.
I'm in rented accommodation with no garage so the trusty Record is bolted to a couple of thicknesses of 18mm ply which I G-clamp to the kitchen work-surface when needed. No damage to the kitchen and many repairs and fabrications completed 🙂
Coatsey wait till you do that to the record
The bottom of ours broke off with an almighty bang under the force of 2 of us turning a frame with gusto to get a bb out and lodged its self into the floor boards - hate to think what would have happened to feet under it :/
oh and..
How did you get the fork to levitate like that?
They are the new fox Floats...
wait wait, or.
They are air sprung
IGMC
4" Record vice, bench mounted, bought it about 10 years ago for about £15 new, its probably the best tool I've ever bought.
The bench is made from 3x2 CLS timber, probably cost me about £20 in total.
I think mounting it on a shelf or suchlike will just be really frustrating, I'd at least make a simple but sturdy trestle for it. 😉
